[SRC-074] Elder brother of the root ancestor PER-000001 - second of the thirteen children of Ockert Oosthuijzen (PER-000118) and Susanna Catharina van TonderMen. Married (1) ANNA MAGDALENA STRIJDOM at Uitenhage, 6 Mar 1808, four children; (2) Anna Helena RoscherH at Colesberg, 8 Feb 1847, five children - two of whom were born before that marriage, in 1842 and 1847. NOT to be confused with PER-000043, the "Jacobus Johannes OosthuisenM (Andries son)" of the 1833 Vrolykheid survey: same name, but this man's father was Ockert and his life ran through Uitenhage and Colesberg.

29 Jul 2026 [SRC-092] MOOC8/28.63: at 25 he was the eldest heir, and the seven minor children were placed with him because "bij het afsterven van zijne ouders heeft belooft dezelve te zullen nazigneemen en doen onderwijzen tot dat zij hunne mondige jaren zullen hebben bereykt" - he promised to take them in AND HAVE THEM EDUCATED until they came of age. All ten surviving siblings were living with him. He also bought the farm de Modder Fonteyn out of the estate for 1,000 rixdollars. This is the FamilySearch "foster" relationship, in the original words.

29 Jul 2026, LOCKED AS PROBABLE: he is the "Jacobus Johannes OosthuisenM, As. [Almero's] son" for whom Vrolykheid was surveyed in Aug 1833 (PER-000043) - reading and reasoning on that row; kept as two rows until a document confirms [TO VERIFY]. His son Ockert Jacobus (PER-000211) was born on Vrolikheid per family tradition [SRC-119].

[SRC-294, Fred van Zyl, 6 Aug 2026] [FAMILY] Given as b7c3d2 and dated 1785-1867. This row reads 1784-1867-10-29: the death year matches exactly and the birth is one year apart, which is the ordinary distance between a birth and a baptism year in compiled sources. Fred also states that his son Ockert Jacobus was born ON VROLIKHEID in 1809, so THIS man's household was already on that ground a generation before the 1833 survey - and that he is therefore the 'Jacobus Johannes OosthuizenL' named on the Vrolikheid diagram. That last is a correction Fred sent within the hour of his own letter. It is a claim this project can test against the diagram itself. [TO VERIFY] See LEAD-0110.

[17 Aug 2026, SRC-451 - HIS OWN DEATH NOTICE, 3999 1/2, and it settles his life outside this district]. BORN in the DIVISION OF SWELLENDAM; the notice gives his age as 82 years 11 months and 10 days at death on 29 October 1867, which computes to a birth on or about 19 NOVEMBER 1784 - agreeing with the 1809 inventory, where he is 25. PARENTS named as OCKERT JACOBUS OOSTHUIZEN and Susanna Catharina van TonderM. DIED at his residence on the farm GROOTFONTEIN, DIVISION COLESBERG. Widow Anna Helena RoscherH, who signs it. Children named as surviving: Ockert Jacobus and Daniel Johannes (majors, by A. M. Strydom), Jacobus Johannes and Hester Cornelia Catharina (minors).

HE DIED WITH ALMOST NOTHING: four oxen, two bales of wool, some household furniture and farming implements, and HALF SHARE OF THE EXPECTED CROPS STILL ON THE LANDS. A half share of a crop is what a bywoner or a share-farmer holds. He did not own Grootfontein.

Superseded: answered below WHAT THIS DOES TO THE VROLIKHEID QUESTION (LEAD-0213): it makes him a WORSE candidate, not a better one. His documented life runs Swellendam (1784) - Modder Fonteyn on the Olifants river (April 1809, his father's estate, with seven minor siblings living with him) - Uitenhage (married 1808) - Colesberg (married again 1847, died 1867). It never passes through the Koup, and his father was an Ockert, not an A-name. [TO VERIFY]

[17 Aug 2026, SRC-452 - THE 1847 MARRIAGE REGISTER, AND IT ANSWERS THE "WHY COLESBERG" QUESTION]. Entry 819, Colesberg, 8 February 1847. He is a VEE BOER; she is a widow of a NESER, of Colesberg. HIS OWN RESIDENCE IS ENTERED AS "HANTAM" - the Calvinia country, not Colesberg and not the Koup. So he came to Colesberg to marry a Colesberg widow and stayed: he died on a Colesberg farm in 1867.

THE DOCUMENTED TRACK IS NOW CONTINUOUS AND IT NEVER TOUCHES THIS DISTRICT: Swellendam division (born 1784) - Uitenhage (married 1808) - Modder Fonteyn on the Olifants river (April 1809) - HANTAM (1847) - Grootfontein, Colesberg (died 1867).

He signs "Jacobus Johannes OosthuysenH" here and on the 1809 inventory, thirty-eight years apart - the same spelling, which is worth keeping under 5a note 6.

*** [17 Aug 2026, SRC-454] THIS REVERSES THE NOTE ABOVE. *** On the strength of the 1867 death notice and the 1847 marriage this row said his documented track "never passes through the Koup". IT DOES. The Graaff-Reinet register has him and Anna Magdalena StrydomM baptising their daughter Anna Magdalena AT ONDER TRAKA on 5 November 1818, with his brother CORNELIS ANDRIES (PER-000015) - this model's Middelwater anchor from about 1821 - standing witness. TRAKA IS THE FIELD CORNETCY NAMED ON THE VROLYKHEID DIAGRAM.

THE LIFE NOW READS: Swellendam division (born 1784) - Uitenhage (married 1808) - Modder Fonteyn on the Olifants (April 1809, his father's estate) - ONDER TRAKA (1818, and his brother beside him) - Hantam (1847) - Grootfontein, Colesberg (died 1867). He was IN this district in the generation before the survey and moved north-east afterwards.

Superseded: answered below SO THE PLACE OBJECTION TO HIM AS THE 1833 VROLYKHEID APPLICANT IS GONE. What is left against him is one thing only: the patronymic, and his father was Ockert Jacobus. See LEAD-0213.

THE BAPTISM AND THE DEATH NOTICE DO AGREE. The 4 May of SRC-455 is the May FOLLOWING the November birth, not the same year: born about 19 November 1784, baptised 4 May 1785. Five and a half months between birth and font is ordinary here - his own daughter was born 1 August 1818 and baptised on 5 November. The apparent conflict recorded earlier today is resolved and nothing needs a second child to explain it.

[17 Aug 2026] MERGED PER-000043 into this row. The 'Jacobus Johannes OosthuisenM As. son' of Vrolykheid diagram B355/1833 is Jacobus Johannes OosthuizenL (1784-1867), eldest of the eleven heirs of the 1809 Modder Fonteyn estate. Merged THE PATRONYMIC IS STILL UNEXPLAINED and LEAD-0213 stays open: his father was Ockert, and the sheet we hold is a 1963 typescript in which a capital O could have been read as A. What decided the merge is that he is documented at onder Traka in 1818 with his brother, that the two adjoining farms went to two of his brothers in the same season, and that no other candidate exists in the whole descendancy. Moved across: flourished_edtf=1833/1841. [20 Aug 2026, SRC-514] Stood witness with his wife at his baby brother Daniel Jacobus Johannes's baptism at Swellendam, '20 Maart' - on the reading of the witnesses, fourteen days after his own marriage. He is 23. This is the earliest dated appearance of him in the record and it puts him at Swellendam with the household that was living on the Olifants River.

*** [20 Aug 2026] HIS FOSTER PROMISE IS WHAT MAKES THE MIGRATION TRACKABLE. *** The 1809 inventory has heirs 5 to 11 'alle woonachtig bij denzelver broeder' and his undertaking to raise and educate the seven. In 1816 he is on the GEORGE roll - 'Jacob Oosthuysen Ock[?]' x 'Anna Magd: Strydom', 1|1|4|2 - with three of those seven enrolled as householders in the same veldcornetcy: Pieter Marthinus, Cornelis Andries and Gerrit Adriaan. George was cut out of Swellendam in 1811, so on the southern-Olifants reading this household never moved at all. See LEAD-0260 for what that does and does not settle.

*** [20 Aug 2026, SRC-522] HE IS IN THE FIRST GEORGE ROLL, 1811, WITH A FARM 'AAN OLYPHANTS RIVIER'. *** J 89, image 93: 'Jacobus Johannes Oosthuiz[en] - Anna Magdalena StrydomM - 1|1|3|2', with Cornelis Andries and Gerrit Adriaan beside him. George was created out of eastern Swellendam on 23 April 1811, so this household did not move - the boundary moved. That is what settles the Modder Fonteyn as the SOUTHERN Olifants: Citrusdal was Tulbagh's and never became George. The farm named here is not Modderfontein but '[?Winkhoop] by het [?Brak] Water', unresolved. LEAD-0220.

[20 Aug 2026, SRC-523] AND AGAIN IN 1813, same district: 'Jacob: Joh: Oosthuijsen x Anna Mag: Strijdom, 1|1|2|3|"|1', with Cornelis Andries, Gerrit Adriaan and now Pieter Marthinus beside him. Three George rolls now carry this household - 1811, 1813, 1816 - so the finding does not rest on one enrolment.

[20 Aug 2026, SRC-522] The place he holds in 1811 is named WANHOOP, 'geleegen by het [?Brak] Water aan Olyphants Rivier', entered as '1 Plaats' - a LOAN place, not title. Neither Wanhoop nor Modder Fonteyn appears in the Western Cape cadastre, which is what loan ground normally leaves behind: nothing.

[20 Aug 2026, SRC-525] The Wanhoop he holds in 1811 sits in the GEORGE district's VELDKORNETSKAP OLIPHANTS RIVIER, whose other farms are Uniondale-division ground - Keurfontein, Misgund, Gorgida, Buffels Klip, Wilge River, Schoongezigt, Wilgehoute Rivier, Paarde Kloof. That is the Langkloof and the upper Olifants, and it settles which Olifants this family was on.

*** [21 Aug 2026] A CATALOGUE ENTRY DATES HIS FIRST WIFE'S DEATH, BEFORE ANYBODY HAS READ THE DOCUMENT. *** NAAIRS holds MOOC 7/1/188 ref 55 (SRC-537): his WILL, drawn 1817, FILED 1847. He married Anna Magdalena StrijdomH at Uitenhage on 1808-03-06 (UNI-000031) and Anna Helena RoscherH on 1847-02-08 (UNI-000032). A joint will is lodged when the first spouse dies and the estate is wound up - so Anna Magdalena StrijdomH died c.1846-47. [TO VERIFY]: an inference from two dates and a filing convention, not a reading of the will.

He is also the man who held land at De Modder Fonteyn in 1809/1810 (SRC-092) and stood witness at the 1808 Swellendam baptism reading 'woonende aan Oliphants Rivier' (SRC-514), so the will is the best chance of a document naming that ground. LEAD-0262.

*** [23 Aug 2026] A REGISTER STATES WHERE THEY LIVED: 'GEORGE DROSTDY', November 1812 (SRC-545, PP-000318). *** Written by a Stellenbosch clerk 331 km from the household - so it is a dwelling recorded, not a church mistaken for one. It corroborates the 1811 George opgaafrol (SRC-522) from a different archive, and it is the same kind of entry as the 1808 Swellendam 'woonende aan Oliphants Rivier' (SRC-514): the clerk writes the home down BECAUSE the distance is unusual.

*** [23 Aug 2026] THE SIBSHIP MARRIED IN BLOCS, AND IT IS THE SHAPE OF THIS WHOLE PROJECT. *** Of the thirteen children of Ockert Jacobus OosthuizenL (PER-000118) with a recorded marriage, SEVEN married children of just TWO households - and in each case they married SIBLINGS.

THE VENTER BLOC, all children of Jan Louis VenterL (PER-000120, b.1754) and Johanna Jacomina SmitM: Ockert Almero x ADRIANA CECILIA VENTER (Oct 1807, Swellendam); Dina Magdalena x JAN LOUIS VENTER the younger; Cornelia Petronella x PETRUS JACOBUS VENTER.

THE STRYDOM BLOC, all children of Daniel Jacobus StrydomM (PER-000337) and Anna Magdalena CalitzM (PER-000338): Jacobus Johannes x ANNA MAGDALENA STRIJDOM (6 Mar 1808, Uitenhage); Cornelis Andries x JOHANNA MACHTELD PETRONELLA STRYDOM (11 Apr 1813); Roelof Adolph x HESTER MARIA CATHARINA STRYDOM; and SARA MARIA OOSTHUIZEN x DAVID JAN STRYDOM - the man granted RONDABEL on 15 April 1841.

A LIKELY THIRD PAIR: Gerrit Adriaan married Petronella Catharina SchoemanM and Pieter Marthinus married Catharina Elisabeth SchoemanM. Neither Schoeman has a recorded parent here, so whether they were sisters is UNTESTED - and the pattern is exactly why it must be tested rather than assumed. An eighth tie runs through the Bothas: Susanna Johanna married Jan Hendrik BothaL, whose mother was a HESTER VENTER.

THE TIMING IS TIGHT. The Venter marriage of October 1807 and the Strydom marriage of March 1808 are FIVE MONTHS APART, and the father died in April 1809. The two alliances were made in the last eighteen months of his life and were still being made fifteen years later.

WHAT IT EXPLAINS: Rondabel. David Jan StrydomM held it from 1841 and it was with Jan Adriaan OosthuizenL by 1868 - and David Jan was married to Jan Adriaan's AUNT. See STO-0043.

[17 Sep 2026] De Villiers (SRC-656) gives 'Jacobus Johannes, gedoopt 4 Mei 1785, gehuwd met Anna Magdalena StrijdomH'. This row's birth is 19 Nov 1784, so the baptism would be six months later [TO VERIFY against the register].
