A line is named for whoever stands at the top of it. Where a couple head the same descendants they are one line and both are named, because that is how a family would say it.

and they are the earliest this record can show here - here before the district had a village of its own. They are listed first. Not all of them enter on ground: some appear carrying a child to the church at Beaufort West, which was this district’s church before Prince Albert had one, and the line says which. A first appearance is not a date of arrival, and the later ones are no less part of this: a stone cut in 1913 on Varsche Fontein is this community too.
