The van Vuurens of Wilgemond 1775–1880 · farm_history
Wilgemond No. 179 was surveyed in 1833 for a "Martinus van Veuren" and granted in 1841 to a "J.M.J. van Vuuren" - two sets of initials on Vrolikheid's western boundary. Four documents later they are a family, and on 22 December 1838 one of them married an Oosthuizen.

Middelwater No. 169: a farm history 1777–2026 · farm_history
From a loan farm on the Zwartberg to eight cadastral parcels: the full documented history of Middelwater No. 169 - Stretch's 1833 survey for Okert Oosthuizen, the twelve-farm grant day of 1841, the 1883 resurvey and the 1884 quitrent to J.D.J. Oosthuysen 'and another', the portions cut off for a spring called Vaste Water and a place called Avondrust, and the 1990 power-line survey whose coordinates finally put the farm on a map.

De Claar Stroom: the farm the town stands on 1777–1901 · farm_history
The loan farm De Claar Stroom (Klaarstroom No. 178), granted 1777, is the ground Klaarstroom village stands on, not to be confused with Klaarstroom No. 184, which is Christian Hatting's grant 19 km west. Meiringspoort opened in 1858; twenty-seven erven were laid out on Petrus Oosthuizen's land and the village was called Petersburg for him. The erven were sold WITHOUT water rights. Who Petrus was is still unknown, and the one testable fact about him is a brother named Ockert.

Vrolykheid No. 177: a farm history 1833–2026 · farm_history
The farm where the paper and the people disagree: Stretch's 1833 survey already carrying the names of portions not cut for another century, two titles granted on one day in 1841 - one to an Oosthuisen and one to an 'N. Hitge' whose deed four later portions cite instead - a Trieste immigrant who married a Hitge in 1844 and died holding the farm in 1890, and the death notice that finally put the Hitges on the ground.

Eight stones on Varsche Fontein 1848–1922 · farm_history
Eight marked graves on the Remainder of Varsche Fontein, from 1848 to 1922. Two Storms in consecutive years seven years after the grant, an infant of 1874 buried apart from the rest, three more children, and finally the patriarch under the only bought stone in the cemetery. None of the families in it appears in the farm's title deeds. A second burial ground twenty kilometres away, on Vredendal, carries the same surnames and shows the families are one intermarried community rather than six.

Kopjes Kraal: a farm that lost a quarter of itself, and a road nobody uses 1859–1941 · farm_history
Crown land surveyed in 1859 at 6,325 morgen and resurveyed four years later at 4,982 - about 1,343 morgen fewer, unexplained. Granted in 1871 to Gerolm Marincowitz of Trieste, whose surname reaches the Karoo from the Adriatic and not from the Netherlands. A stock route across it was ended by a line in a provincial gazette in 1926, and half of what was left became Kromrivier in 1934.

Three farms in one deed: Anna Margaretha, 1937 1879–1973 · farm_history
On 20 December 1937 one transfer deed put three farms and 11,897 morgen into the name of Anna Margaretha Marincowitz, born Oosthuizen - Tokkie's mother, and one of only seven women in this model recorded holding ground in her own right. Her father had died fourteen months earlier and her brother took the neighbouring portion the same day.

Vredendal: three surnames on the stones, one family in the house 1886–2020 · farm_history
Vredendal is a werf name on Spreeufontein No. 26, the farm the district called Gatsplaas. Five graves carrying three surnames, an 1886 slate slab whose inscription dates a woman to the day and whose line runs unbroken back to Enkhuizen in 1744, and then a household: the van der Merwes, and a man who died on his own birthday.

How four grandparents out of four lines met: three weddings in four years at Bellville and Williston, and a fourth marriage that tied two of them back together after both were widowed. Nine fields in a Dutch East India Company ledger: a young man from Woerden - or Werden, or Werl - sails from Texel owing the Company his passage, sees Table Bay 127 days later, and five years on stops being a servant and becomes a settler. Everyone in this project descends from that decision.

The Oosthuizens of the Koup 1685–1979 · origin
Eight generations east, from a VOC soldier off the Land van Schouwen in 1685 to a farmer baptised at Prince Albert in 1909. An 1809 estate inventory shows a forge on the Olifants River and explains in one line why the family left: the farm was sold to the eldest son for 1 000 rixdollars, and the rest had to find ground elsewhere. After 1836 they stop moving, and title and a congregation arrive in the same two years.

The Jouberts and Duminys of the winelands 1691–1975 · origin
The one line that never lived in the Karoo, and reached it three times anyway - in 1904, 1945 and 1946, every time through a woman. It also holds the only one of the four origins this record can put on a map: a foundling born at Lorient in Brittany in 1747, who became a Dutch East India Company sea captain, harbour master at Simonstown, and a slaver.

The van Rensburgs of the dry north 1717–2019 · origin
Nine generations, of which eight are names and years, and then a boy orphaned sixteen months apart in 1896 and 1898, given to a family called Vos, and turned out at twenty-five with a horse. He bought a boring machine and sold windpumps through the worst droughts the region records. The line that lost the Janse from its surname in one generation.

The van der Merwes of the Hantam 1735–1950 · origin
The maternal line, from Paarl in 1735 to Vredendal in about 1950, with every kinship spelled out. The crossing from the Piketberg district into the Hantam is dated to a fourteen-year window by two death notices; three farms were surveyed for the Commissie van Inspectie by one man in 1820 and 1823; a man called Kwaai Koos is named after his farm; and twice in three generations the family is standing on ground that came in through a woman.

Two farms called Vrolykheid 1749–1933 · origin
Two farms of one name, 400 km apart. The 1816 Tulbagh diagram names four neighbours; two of the surnames turn up in the Koup and only ONE survives being looked at. Jan de Bruin, whose 1823 estate held a farm the inventories call Rondabel, was baptised at Tulbagh in 1769, but the Theron who took Rondabel in 1868 was a Roggeveld man, and that thread is a coincidence of surname reported as one.

The brother-in-law who founded a town 1808–1906 · origin
Two daughters of Middelwater marry two van Zyl brothers in the 1830s. One stays. The other goes north on the trek and is dead by about 1840, and her husband lives another sixty-six years and lays out the Free State town of Brandfort on his farm Keerom - described in print as a Voortrekker from Prince Albert.

Forty-six things 1802–1802 · event
On 27 April 1802 a clerk listed everything an old couple owned, forty-six items, and the forty-fourth is a man. Anthony van de Kaap sits between a plough and a flock of sheep. The page reads the inventory as it stands, sets it beside the ten enslaved and free-black people in the same family's own ancestry, and follows the line four generations back to a daughter baptised before her mother was freed.

The Prince Albert gold rush 1871–1892 · event
An aardvark turns up a nugget on Spreeuwfontein in 1871; twenty years later a shepherd finds a second one and five hundred people arrive. 1,042 claims yield 504 ounces. The diggers' village was called Gatsplaas.

The war reaches the Koup 1899–1903 · event
The Anglo-Boer War came to these farms twice: up the road from Klaarstroom on 2 February 1901, when a running fight through Die Gang left a Boer of Scheepers's commando dead on Remhoogte; and quietly in 1903, when a woman from Tulbagh married into a Prince Albert family having buried two brothers in Natal thirty-four days apart - two brothers Deneys Reitz very probably names in Commando.

A Venetian teenager in the service of the Dutch East India Company stands godfather at a Cape baptism in 1786. Six generations of Karoo farmers carry his name, and nobody remembers why.

Adriana Cecilia Venter bore fourteen children between 1808 and about 1840. She was sixteen at the first and about forty-eight at the last, and the thirty-two years between them are exactly the period in which this family took its land.

Jan Adriaan Venter was born on Wolve Kraal in 1823, orphaned off it at five, bought it at thirty-one, halved it and named half after himself at thirty-three, and spent the next thirty-seven years selling that half away.

Two framed portrait sketches out of a loft on Klueplaas, which is ex-Middelwater ground. No names on the backing. A strong circumstantial case that they are Ockert Almero Oosthuizen and Aletta Hitge, and no evidence at all. The images are NOT published: permission has not been asked.

Six graves on Botterkraal 1919–1948 · anecdote
A farm cemetery near Zeekoegat holds six burials between 1927 and 1942. Fifteen years, and the whole of what happened to one family, in one fenced plot: the purchase in 1919, ACVV relief, a fence built by hand, nine hundred wethers walked home from Colesberg, and a forced sale in 1943.

Roy Oosthuizen's fossil 1980–2017 · anecdote
Roy Oosthuizen split a nodule on Zwartkraal in the 1980s and found a braincase. Oelofsen named it for him in 1986 and filed it as a shark. In 2013, fourteen years after he died, a CT scan read the inside of it and found a chimaera - and with it the origin of the last major vertebrate group nobody could place. Nature, 4 Jan 2017.

The Koup before the grants 1762–1841 · context
The district in the Dutch East India Company's own minutes, from the Swartberg being taken as a jurisdictional wall in 1770 to more than a hundred places standing abandoned in 1791. The Koup is named, given an officer, bounded by rivers and emptied, all before the grants of 1841 that this record otherwise begins with.
The men who drew the lines 1816–1940 · context
Every farm here passes through two officials: a veldkornet who knew the ground, and a surveyor paid by the sheet. Forty-two surveyor signatures over 172 years, a century of ward officers, and a ward boundary changing by hand on a 1934 diagram. The first surveyor, C. Lennox Stretch, was later dismissed for taking the Xhosa side.

Eighty-one thousand morgen 1856–1937 · context
Frederik Simon 'Oom Frikkie' Oosthuizen died in 1936 holding, by one account, 81,000 morgen around Zwartkraal - about a quarter of all the ground on this map. This project holds not one deed in his name. What the money was probably in, what it was certainly not in, and the one document that would settle it.

Twenty-four months 1858–1860 · context
Between February 1858 and February 1860 the Koup acquired a road to the sea, buried the couple the whole district descends from, laid out a village, had Crown land surveyed on its eastern edge, and met the industry that paid for the next forty years.

What is under the Koup 1871–2025 · context
Four times people have come to this country certain there was something valuable under it: gold in 1871 and 1891, oil in the middle 1960s, uranium from 1969 to 1985, and shale gas from 2011. A drill bit still lies on Rondabel. The boreholes SOEKOR drilled for oil are the same cores that deflated the shale gas estimate fifty years later.

The French Observatory 1954–1996 · context
Six European countries spend seven years looking for a southern sky and build a working observatory on a Zeekoegat sheep farm, then leave for Chile. The third time the outside world came to this one farm for something it could not get elsewhere - after the gold and the fossils - and the third time the answer was nearly.
