Jan Adriaan Venter was born on Wolve Kraal in 1823, orphaned off it at five, bought it at thirty-one, halved it and named half after himself at thirty-three, and spent the next thirty-seven years selling that half away.
Jan Adriaan Venter was born on Wolve Kraal on 8 December 1823.
Seventy-five years later he died having owned it, halved it, named half of it after himself, and sold that half away piece by piece. The record holds every step of that, which is not true of many lives here.
1829: the father dies, and the household is counted
His father, also Jan Adriaan Venter, died at the place Rondavel on 23 July 1829. The boy was five.
On 29 October 1829 the Orphan Chamber took the inventory, MOOC8/44.48, in the field cornetcy of Hermanus van der Westhuisen, Traka, district of Beaufort. It is a short document and it is worth reading for what it does not contain:
One bed. Three chairs. Four plates. A defect ox wagon.
And seven hundred and seven sheep and goats.
No cash. No credits. No enslaved people. All three debts owed to the widow's own family.
That is a young trekboer household exactly: nothing indoors, everything on the hoof, and the neighbours it owes money to are relatives. Five heirs, born between 1819 and 1827.
The widow was Maria Catharina Venter, and it is through her, not through the father, whose column is blank, that the boy is tied to this household. She was the elder sister of Adriana Cecilia Venter, who bore the fourteen children on Middelwater, which makes this five-year-old first cousin to all of them. [TREE]
1841: his uncle is given the farm
On 15 April 1841, the grant day, Wolwekraal No. 17, 14,502 morgen, was granted on perpetual quitrent to Johannes Hendrik Venter, on Qts Vol 6 Fol 9. The boy was seventeen, and had been born on that ground eighteen years earlier.
He was the two sisters' brother not yet verified, which makes him the boy's uncle, and makes the man who took Wolwekraal on the grant day brother to the matriarch of the Oosthuizen line (S023). That step rests on a tree match rather than on a deed. The sisters themselves do not: both are daughters of Jan Louis Venter and Johanna Jacomina Smit.
1855: Jan Adriaan buys Wolwekraal
On 20 November 1855, aged thirty-one, he buys Wolwekraal jointly with Johannes Hendrik Mostert, on transport 294.
An orphan of a household whose entire indoor estate was a bed, three chairs and four plates bought the farm he was born on, twenty-six years after his father's death.
1857: one day at the Deeds Office
On 10 March 1857 two instruments are registered, and they are the same act seen from two sides:

He took half the farm, put his own name on it, and in the same registry session cut two thousand morgen out of that half for a Swanepoel, a man born on Vlakfontein, of the family that had married into this one.
A farm becomes a surname in one afternoon. Venterskraal is not a place-name that came down from the veld; it is a man naming ground after himself the day he got it.
1879–1898: it goes out again
The Swanepoel piece moves brother to brother in 1879, 1,458 morgen, transport 430, and is sold out of the family on 14 December 1897, transport 10724, to Willem Adriaan Venter, who had been buying fragments of Venterskraal since 1879 and was reassembling the old farm from the outside.
Jan Adriaan Venter died on 23 November 1898, eleven months later.
Seventy-five years
Born on it in 1823. Orphaned off it at five. Bought it at thirty-one. Halved it and named half after himself at thirty-three. Spent the next thirty-seven years selling that half away, and died the year after the last big piece left the family.

Research notes
[6 Aug 2026] Discovery item KIN-01, and the model turned out to support it by a different route than the report gave. The report has him as 'heir 3' of the 1829 Rondavel estate; parentage has no FATHER row for him at all. What it does have is his MOTHER, PER-000341 Maria Catharina VenterM, who is the Rondavel widow - so the tie to that household is real and runs through her. Written that way and said on the page.
AND IT JOINS TWO STORIES THAT DID NOT KNOW THEY WERE JOINED: PER-000095, the 1841 Wolwekraal grantee, is on this project's own probable identification the brother of BOTH the Rondavel widow and Adriana Cecilia VenterM (S023). The man who took Wolwekraal on the grant day and the woman who bore fourteen children on Middelwater were brother and sister, and the 1855 buyer was their nephew.
Verified before writing: the 1841 grant to PER-000095 on Qts Vol 6 Fol 9; the joint purchase of 20 Nov 1855, transport 294, with PER-000097; the two instruments of 10 Mar 1857, transports 149 and 151; the 1879 brother-to-brother transfer, transport 430; and the sale out of the family on 14 Dec 1897, transport 10724, to PER-000107 - who had been buying Venterskraal fragments since 1879.
The uncle identification stays [TO VERIFY] because it rests on a tree match rather than a deed, and the page says so. The reason for the 1897 sale is not in this record at all - LEAD-0101. [8 Aug 2026, quality run] SPAN vs EVENTS, adjudicated. Claims 1823-1898; the three events it tells run 1829-1857 and are all linked. The last forty years of the span are carried by the deeds - the 1857 division and what followed - and no event row exists for them yet. A research gap, not a linking one.

THE PAGE HUNG ITS BEST CONNECTION ON ITS WEAKEST EVIDENCE. Every tie between this boy and the Oosthuizen line ran through the uncle identification, which the page itself marks [TO VERIFY] because it rests on a tree match and not a deed. parentage.csv holds a better one that does not depend on it at all: MARIA CATHARINA VENTER PER-000341, b.1783, the widow, and ADRIANA CECILIA VENTER PER-000002, b.1792, the Middelwater matriarch, are BOTH daughters of Jan Louis VenterL PER-000120 and Johanna Jacomina SmitM PER-000121. They are sisters, and Jan Adriaan VenterL is therefore first cousin to the fourteen children on Middelwater. Stated now, tagged [TREE] since the parentage rows carry confidence='medium'. PER-000002's own notes say the same thing in words - 'her elder sister Maria Catharina's household held Rondabel by 1829' - so the story and the record now agree instead of the record knowing more. The uncle claim is kept, still [TO VERIFY], and the page now says plainly which step rests on the tree match and which does not.
THE PAGE QUOTED OUR OWN DATABASE NOTE BACK AT THE READER: 'This project's note on him is blunt: he took half of Wolwekraal as Venterskraal in 1857 and sold it away piece by piece over the next 37 years.' That is PER-000096's notes field, not a document, and every fact in it is already on the page - the 1857 halving in its own section, the thirty-seven years in the closing summary. Cut in both languages; nothing lost.
'The boy was seventeen and had been born on that ground eighteen years earlier' stood alone as a turned closing line under the 1841 grant. Same words, folded into the grant paragraph, where the age sits against the date it belongs to.
'What Jan Adriaan's seventy-five years are, and what they are not' -> 'Seventy-five years', and the 'two things this page does not claim' paragraph becomes a 'What has not been worked out' panel with LEAD-0101 linked.
