Research notes

[SRC-074] First wife of PER-000208, married Uitenhage 6 Mar 1808. A STRYDOM MARRYING AN OOSTHUIZEN in the generation before Rondabel was surveyed for a Strydom (1833) and granted to David Jan StrydomM (1841). Another thread to pull on the Oosthuizen-Strydom question, alongside Johanna Machteld Petronella StrydomM (PER-000138).

[31 Jul 2026] MERGED PER-000540 into this row. PROVEN DUPLICATE, resolved on the FamilySearch id. Both rows carry K69K-QNS; an FS id names one person, so these are one person recorded twice. Created by the 31 Jul 2026 one-degree tree pull, which matched on tree id alone - and 255 model people carry no tree id, so any of them one hop from a tree-linked person was added again. [17 Aug 2026, SRC-453] HER OWN DEATH NOTICE: died 30 JULY 1846 at COLESBERG, aged 53, born at SOMERSET, Cape Colony. She is the "late A. M. Strydom" named on her husband's 1867 notice (SRC-451); he remarried at Colesberg six months later (SRC-452).

*** [22 Aug 2026] BORN AT BRUINTJIESHOOGTE [FAMILY] - AND THAT IS A MIGRATION FACT, NOT JUST A BIRTHPLACE. *** She was born on the EASTERN FRONTIER, the settlement country under the Boschberg between present-day Pearston and Somerset East, about 1790. PLC-000087.

The distances are the point. Bruintjieshoogte is 119 km from UITENHAGE, where she married Jacobus Johannes OosthuizenL on 6 March 1808 - so the marriage happened at her end of the country, not his. It is 267 km from the OLIFANTS, where the household is enrolled by 1811, and 328 km from MIDDELWATER in the Koup. So the Oosthuizen son went east to marry and the couple then moved WEST, against the family's own long eastward drift, and their children were raised on the Olifants.

'District Somerset' is the recorder's label and cannot be the district of 1790: Somerset East was founded in 1825, and that ground was Graaff-Reinet district from 1786. The same class of artefact as the province tails 5 warns about, and worth knowing because it dates the SOURCE rather than the event.

*** SHE IS THE SISTER OF DAVID JAN STRYDOM, WHO WAS GRANTED RONDABEL ON 15 APRIL 1841. *** Full siblings - PER-000042 carries the same father and the same mother. She married JACOBUS JOHANNES OOSTHUIZEN (PER-000208) at Uitenhage on 6 March 1808, and he is the man who held land at De Modder Fonteyn and Wanhoop on the Olifants.

SO THE OLIFANTS GROUND AND THE KOUP GROUND ARE JOINED BY THIS MARRIAGE, thirty-three years before the Rondabel grant. And it runs one step further: her husband's brother was OCKERT ALMERO OOSTHUIZEN (PER-000001), and Ockert Almero's son JAN ADRIAAN took Rondabel FROM her brother by 1868. The man who received Rondabel was the nephew of the man who married the previous holder's sister.

THE BIRTHPLACE IS NOT SETTLED BY THIS RECORD. The index prints 'Paarl' in its Birthplace field, but it prints the event place there - see SRC-543. Family knowledge gives BRUINTJIESHOOGTE (PLC-000087, PP-000317), and a baptism at Paarl neither confirms nor refutes it. The ten months between 12 January and 14 November 1790 is the thing worth explaining, and a distant home is one explanation. LEAD-0271.

*** [23 Aug 2026] SEE SRC-545: the Stellenbosch register of November 1812 names her as the mother of Daniel Johannes and gives the household's district as GEORGE DROSTDY (PP-000319). *** She was herself baptised at Paarl in 1790, 23 km from Stellenbosch - whether the family came west because her people were there is LEAD-0271 and is not settled by this. A Strydom kinswoman, Anna Magdalena Petronella Strydom, stood witness; she is not in this model.
