• Where is Kriedouw, and were the Oosthuizens there in July 1821? priority 1 · LEAD-0052

  The Beaufort West register puts the direct-ancestor couple's son born 'aan KRIEDOUW' on 26 July 1821. Most entries on the page say the same. Where is it, and how does it sit against the belief that the family established at Middelwater about 1821?

  What would settle it A gazetteer or a map fixing Kriedouw, or an opgaafrol entry putting the couple on a named farm in 1820-22.

• Which Jacobus Johannes Oosthuizen was Vrolykheid surveyed for in 1833, and what does "As. son" mean? priority 1 · LEAD-0213

  Diagram B355/1833 reads "Surveyed for Jacobus Johannes OosthuizenL As. son". Whose son, and which Jacobus Johannes?

  What would settle it THE DEATH NOTICE OF JACOBUS JOHANNES OOSTHUIZEN, who died 29 October 1867 - it names the father and usually the farm, and it should sit in the same FamilySearch collection as SRC-077, 'Cape, Probate Records of the Master of the High Court, 1822-1990'. That is now the cheapest test and it is cheaper than the deeds office. | Then the ORIGINAL 1833 MANUSCRIPT diagram at the SG office, because what this project holds is a 1963 typed copy and the disputed word is the typist's. | Then title deed Bf.W.Q.5-1[?] of 15 April 1841.

• Were the three farms of the 1833 survey season taken up by three brothers? priority 1 · LEAD-0215

  Middelwater was surveyed for "Okert Oosthuizen" (PER-000054), Vrolykheid for "Jacobus Johannes OosthuizenL As. son" (PER-000043), and De Claar Stroom between them belonged to "Petrus Oosthuizen" (PER-000505). Are these three men Ockert Almero (PER-000001), Jacobus Johannes (PER-000208) and Pieter Marthinus (PER-000146), three of the eighteen children of Ockert Jacobus OosthuizenL (PER-000118)?

  What would settle it A deed or a register naming any one of the three with a patronymic or a father, on the farm. Failing that, an estate file for Pieter Marthinus that names De Claar Stroom.

• Who held De Claar Stroom between 1777 and 1833, and why did the Oosthuizens come to this ground? priority 1 · LEAD-0216

  The loan farm De Claar Stroom was granted in 1777 and ran from Middelwater to Vrolikheid. No holder is recorded for it before Petrus Oosthuizen in 1858. Who had it in between, and is there a tie between that household and the Oosthuizens of the Olifants River that would explain why they came to exactly this ground rather than anywhere else in the Karoo?

  What would settle it A named holder of De Claar Stroom in the 1810s, and any tie of marriage, witnessing or trade between that household and the Oosthuizens before 1818.

• Where the four brothers were between the 1809 estate and the Koup, and whether the estate pushed them east at all priority 1 · LEAD-0221

  The 1809 estate breaks up the Modder Fonteyn household and the brothers next appear in the Traka field cornetcy in 1818. What is in between? And does the sequence support the account both S037 and S042 give, that the estate is what sent them east?

  What would settle it Register entries naming the farm for any of these baptisms, and an opgaafrol placing a household in a named field cornetcy between 1810 and 1818.

• Which Oosthuizens came to the Koup, and where did the ones who did not go? priority 2 · LEAD-0214

  Ockert (1755) x Susanna Catharina van TonderM had eighteen children. One of them, Ockert Almero (1786), is the root of everything this project holds. What happened to the other seventeen - who stayed in the western Cape, who went to Hanover and the northern frontier, who joined the emigration of 1838?

  What would settle it A branch-by-branch destination for each of the eighteen, each one resting on a dated record - a baptism, a death notice, a grave - rather than on a family-tree place string, which 5 says is systematically wrong and must not be used as evidence.

• The Modderfontein cluster in Riversdale - is it the Swellendam ground the family came from? priority 2 · LEAD-0222

  SRC-451, the 1867 death notice, says Jacobus Johannes OosthuizenL was born in the DIVISION OF SWELLENDAM about 19 November 1784. The cadastre holds a dense MODDERFONTEIN cluster in RIVERSDALE - farms 417, 569, 570, 579, 670, 685 and 367, all within two kilometres of -34.26, 21.40 - and Riversdale was carved out of Swellendam in 1838. Is that the family's earlier ground, and is it the same name travelling with them?

  What would settle it An opgaafrol or a loan-farm register entry naming an Oosthuizen at a Swellendam Modderfontein before 1809. Absent that, the name is a coincidence with a good story attached.
