The location column repeats 'boven aan Olifants Rivier' down the page. | *** AND THE NEIGHBOURS PIN IT: THIS IS THE UNIONDALE COUNTRY. *** Matched against the Chief Surveyor-General's gazetteer (SRC-510) on 20 Aug 2026, SEVEN of those names are Uniondale-division farms and several have no rival anywhere else: KEURFONTEIN 45, MISGUND 25, GORGIDA 14 (Gorgotha), BUFFELS KLIP 63, WILGE RIVER 46, SCHOONGEZIGT 52, WILGEHOUTE RIVIER 69, PAARDE KLOOF 5. That is the Langkloof and the upper Olifants - the BOVEN OLIPHANTS RIVIER country - and it is in the GEORGE district, as it was from 1811. | *** SO 'WANHOOP GELEEGEN BY HET VAALE WATER AAN OLIPHANTS RIVIER' (SRC-522) IS HERE, NOT AT CLANWILLIAM. *** The VAALWATER at Clanwilliam 73 was a coincidence of a descriptive name, which is exactly the risk that row recorded when it found it: 'vaale water' is pale or turbid water and an unregistered one could sit on any river. IT DID. | AND WANHOOP ITSELF IS NOT IN THE CADASTRE, like Modderfonteyn - it was a loan place and never took title. THE METHOD THAT FOUND IT ANYWAY IS WORTH KEEPING: you cannot look up an untitled farm, but you can look up ITS NEIGHBOURS on the same page, and they pin it. | WHO HOLDS IT HERE IS NOT AN OOSTHUIZEN: entry 203 Wanhoop stands against 'Wed:e Ant:e NORTJE', the widow of Anthonie Nortje, with 'Anthony Nortje Jr' on the next line. Jacobus Johannes held it in 1811 (SRC-522); by this volume it has passed. Loan places changed hands on recognition and that is ordinary. [TO VERIFY] - and the year of J 91 is unknown, so the interval is unknown too. | JACOBUS JOHANNES IS STILL IN THE SECTION, at entry 208 with a Strydom wife, on what may read as Elands Fonteyn. NOT SETTLED; the given name of the wife does not resolve and the farm name is marked. | ONE THING TO REVISIT: SRC-459 concluded from the running totals that the four brothers on the 1816 roll are NOT in Veldcornetschap Boven Olyphantsrivier but in the one immediately after it. This volume has them IN a Veldkornetskap Oliphants Rivier. Either the cornetcies were renamed or resurveyed between volumes, or that subtotal reading wants checking again.
