Research notes
"Frikkie". Wealthy farmer of ZWARTKRAAL. Deacon 1889, elder 1906. Built the Zeekoegat church at his own expense 1906 (inaugurated Feb 1907), the church hall 1929, and the mission church; gave the land and buildings to the congregation in 1936. Donated 150 pounds toward the Prince Albert organ in 1885, helped maintain a mission station in Mashonaland, and gave 300 Afrikaans Bibles to the children of the congregation in 1933. Buried beside the Zeekoegat church. [SRC-067]
29 Jul 2026 [SRC-073]: named for his maternal grandfather Frederik Simon MockeL.
30 Jul 2026 [SRC-068] THE SCALE OF THE WEALTH, per Judy Maguire in the Zeekoegat cameo: "Oom Frikkie was the senior family man, owned 81 000 morgen around the family farm Zwartzkraal. He also owned most of the farms from the N1 to the Traka and westwards too - Groot and Klein Sleutelfontein and Zeekoegat." 81,000 morgen is roughly 69,400 ha. Zeekoegat was still farmed by Piet du Plessis in 1891 (he identified the gold nugget, same source), so part of the buying falls in the 1890s-1900s - the rinderpest/war/drought decade. WHERE THE MONEY CAME FROM: LEAD-0012. || 30 Jul 2026 THE 1937 RHEMHOOGTE TRANSFERS ARE PROBABLY HIS ESTATE DIVISION: he died 10 Oct 1936; on 20.12.1937 his son Ernest Albert (PER-000424, deed 13525, Annex Modderdrift PAR-000069) and his daughter Anna Margaretha (PER-000176, deed 13528, Kareemoerhoek PAR-000070) each took a Rhemhoogte portion ON THE SAME DAY - 14 months after his death, classic estate-administration timing. Implies FSO himself held Rhemhoogte ground late in life, acquired somewhere after his brother John Peter's deed 341 of 1884 - a gap in the chain [TO VERIFY: the transferor named in deeds 13525/13528].

30 Jul 2026 [SRC-126/DOC-0086] Listed fourth among the five surviving children on his father's 1903 death notice.
[1 Aug 2026, SRC-068 Zeekoegat cameo] THE EXTENT OF THE HOLDING, from Judy Maguire: about 81,000 MORGEN around the family farm Zwartskraal, and "most of the farms from the N1 to the Traka and westwards too". Groot and Klein Sleutelfontein (PAR-000098) and Zeekoegat. A large community grew up on Zeekoegat and that, as much as the distances, is why he built the church. He was fond of children: he bought 300 copies of the new Afrikaans Bible in 1933 for the local children, and every year he held a WATERMELON FESTIVAL in the forest on Zeekoegat to which every child in the district was invited. *** NAME WARNING, and it is Maguire's own: THERE WERE TWO MEN NAMED FREDERIK SIMON. This one is "the senior family man". Any Frederik Simon OosthuizenH fact from this district must be tested against dates and ground before it is attached here, see 9. ***
[GRAVE GRV-0002, 7 Aug 2026] HIS STONE SAYS 29 MAY, THE TREE SAYS 19 MAY, AND THE STONE IS ADOPTED. 'IN LIEFDEVOLLE HERINNERING AAN ONS LIEWE VADER FREDERICK SIMON OOSTHUIZEN, GEB. 29ste MEI 1856, OORL. 10de OKTOBER 1936, IN DIE OUDERDOM VAN 80 JAAR', with GOD IS LIEFDE cut on the base. The death date matches this row exactly, which is what identifies the stone. birth_edtf was 1856-05-19, taken from the private tree (, '19 May 1856'); FamilySearch gives years only. A 9 and a 1 transposed is the ordinary shape of this error, and a stone his children paid for and read before it was cut is the better witness than a compiled tree. THE AGE ON THE STONE DOES NOT SETTLE IT - 80 years is true either way. The tree's date is kept here rather than overwritten. [TO VERIFY] against a baptism register, which would end it.
These are working notes, not finished prose: they carry the reasoning, the corrections and the things still marked to verify. They are kept here so the page itself can read as what is known.
