"J.D.J. Oosthuysen" of the 1884 Middelwater quitrent. Brother of Frans's direct ancestor Johannes Adriaan (1816), so Frans's 3x-great-granduncle, and father of Frederik Simon (1856-1936). [SRC-067] Served on the church council and sat on the BUILDING COMMITTEE of the present Prince Albert church in 1860.

29 Jul 2026 [SRC-073]: married Sophia Johanna MockeH (PER-000136) at Prince Albert 14 Jun 1847; children Adriana Cecilia (m. Vivier), Fredrika Johanna (m. van der Hoeven), Ockert Almero, FREDERICK SIMON and John Peter. Remarried Mary Jane WelchH. Died at 7 Schoonder Street, Cape Town - KAB: MOOC 6/9/476.1897.

29 Jul 2026 [TREE]: married the widow SOPHIA JOHANNA MOCKE (PER-000136, UNI-000040) after Charles Frederick HitgeL died at Oorlogs Kloof in 1846 - so ALETTA HITGE grew up as his stepdaughter on Middelwater, and her 1863 marriage to his nephew Ockert Almero (PER-000005) was a match made inside the household. A son christened PEETER MARINCOWITZ OOSTHUYSEN (1867) shows how close the Marincowitz tie ran. TREE ERROR noted: Frederick Simon (b.1856) is listed under both of Mocke's marriages in the tree; he belongs to this one (Hitge died 1846).

30 Jul 2026 [SRC-126/DOC-0086] HIS DEATH NOTICE READ: died 11 Jun 1903 at No. 7 SCHOONDER STREET, CAPE TOWN, a 'RETIRED GENTLEMAN', aged 79y 9m (= born Sep 1823, corroborating 2 Sep 1823 to the month). Born Prince Albert. Parents given as 'August Almero Oosthuizen' [sic - OCKERT ALMERO, PER-000001: per the writing is likely 'Auqurt/Augurt', an English-speaking clerk's phonetic attempt at the Afrikaans 'Ockert'; the mother Adriana Cecilia (Venter, PER-000002) fixes the couple regardless] - so the death notice confirms him as a son of THE ROOT COUPLE. Remarried after Sophia's death: MARY JANE WELCH (PER-000471), 15 May 1886 at Cape Town per the tree, six months after Sophia died - the Middelwater patriarch finished his life in the city with an English second wife 28 years his junior. The notice lists FIVE children: Adriana Cecilia (m. Vivier), Fredrika Johanna (m. van den Hoeven), Ockert Almero, Frederick Simon, John Peter. ABSENT though alive: ABEL ALBERTUS (PER-000371) - strong primary evidence he was NOT J.D.J.'s son. Absent and probably predeceased: Jacobus Johannes (PER-000390) and Margaretha Appollonia (PER-000394).

30 Jul 2026 (Frans): the notice lists SURVIVING children only - deceased children were not entered. So absence implies predecease, not non-relation - EXCEPT for Abel Albertus, who was alive in 1903; his absence is the one that still argues parentage.

PER-000373 Sophia Johanna OosthuizenL (b.1850) and PER-000443 Adriana Cecilia OosthuizenL (b.1848) each carry two parentage rows naming different couples. Which is right?

What would settle it A baptism entry. Nothing short of it - both rows are [TREE] and neither has a register behind it.
Who was the "and another" who took 86% of Middelwater in June 1884 priority 1 · LEAD-0136
The 1884 quitrent title to Middelwater No. 169 issued to "J. D. J. Oosthuysen, and another", and the co-grantee is not named on the diagram. Three months later 9,264 morgen 180 roods - 86% of the farm - transferred away under transfer 304 of 26 June 1884. Who was the second grantee, and was that transfer a sale out of the family or a partition between the two of them?

What would settle it The grant P.A.Q.3-3 or transfer 304, either of which names the second party.

What would settle it The current title deed traced backwards, each transfer names the one before it, or the Surveyor-General's subdivision diagrams, which are what usually explain a farm going quiet.

On Middelwater, an unnamed holder is the last owner recorded from 1841-04-15, and the next entry is Jacobus Daniel Johannes OosthuizenH and Oosthuysen co-ownerM (unidentified) from 1884-03-24, 43 years later, with no person in common. DOC-0001 records the later arrival but not the 43 years before it.

What would settle it The Deeds Office transfer register for this farm between 1841 and 1884. A transfer names its predecessor in title, so one deed closes the whole gap.
