The citation as it was given

Extracts, made by Anna Oosthuizen, from the diary of ALMERO JACOBUS HITGE OOSTHUIZEN (PER-000016, LDQC-R17, 1878-1961) of Droogekloof. WHAT IT ESTABLISHES, each carried to the model 25 Aug 2026: (1) his father Ockert Almero (PER-000005) HELD KOUWVELDT - 'die eigenlike naam was Klein Vallei', which is KLEIN VALIE No. 182 (PAR-000088), portions still named Koude Veld and Kouveld - and SOLD IT IN 1897 TO JAN MULLER (PER-001919), the family moving to DROOGEKLOOF (PAR-000007), 'sy ander plaas'; (2) the writer's grandfather JAN ADRIAAN OOSTHUIZEN (PER-000003) LIVED ON MIDDELWATER IN 1865, watering the orange grove before the house from vats in that drought - a dwelling statement for the direct line (RES-000039); (3) the 1885 three-day rain that washed out Meiringspoort (corroborates EVT-000211) and killed ostriches; (4) the 1887 'geldskaarste' with prices; (5) the 1892 PERDEVREKTE - 14 of 95 horses and mules left (EVT-000316); (6) KLAARSTROOM WAS EARLIER KNOWN AS PIETERSBURG, with a hotel and the shop of L. van Zyl, the business of R. [?Faesie] & Kie under manager Bernhardt, the hotel licence removed when ds. A.G. DU TOIT (PER-001921) became Prince Albert predikant; (7) the 1897 brandsiekwet and Genl. Kemp's dippings; (8) droughts 1914/15 (ended by 10 duim in 1916), 1926/29 (three and a half years; Afdelingsraad relief roadworks in the wyk Zeekoegat; the MEIRINGSPOORT VERLEGGINGS lifting the road above the flood mark; 1929 loans of 200 pounds), and 1939 with depression (wool at 3d plus 3d subsidy); (9) the camping (fencing) of the district's farms in those years. His memories close 1885-1933; he died in 1961. Testimony at one and two removes - his own life, and his father's stories of 1865 - weighed as memoir, not as a register.

Kept verbatim. This project contradicts published genealogies and corrects a family's own oral tradition, so every claim has to be checkable by someone who was not in the room.
