Research notes

[3 Aug 2026, SRC-206] *** THIS ROW EXISTS TO SETTLE A FARM NUMBER. *** Since 29 July, PAR-000052 has carried an unresolved conflict: the Willis & Atkinson cameo maps RIETFONTEIN as farm 12 on the Zeekoegat road, while our downloaded cadastre names farm 12 MINNIES KRAAL. Two 1990 SG diagrams then confirmed Rietfontein Nr 12 (SRC-202, SRC-203). This 1955 diagram closes the other half: the surveyor's title block reads "DIE PLAAS MINNIES KRAAL NR 112". So Minnies Kraal is 112, Rietfontein is 12, and the cadastre extract's "farm 12 = MINNIES KRAAL" is an error - most likely 112 keyed as 12. NO POLYGON AND NO KEY, deliberately: the farm is recorded for its NUMBER, and pinning it would mean trusting the same extract that got the number wrong. It is also outside the Klaarstroom basin - it is here as evidence, not as a farm this project follows.

[3 Aug 2026] WHO WAS MINNIE? The name has never been explained here. A Mienie/Minnie family is now documented in this district and married into two of this project's families - a van Vuuren of the Wilgemond line took Adriana Johanna Mienie as his second wife in 1836, and a Minnie born at Prince Albert in 1884 married a Swanepoel. That makes the farm name worth chasing rather than assuming. It is NOT established: the oldest document held for this farm is a 1955 diagram, which is far too late to say who it was named for. [TO VERIFY]

[3 Aug 2026, SRC-251/SRC-252] THE FARM IS NOW PLACED BY ITS NEIGHBOURS rather than by its name. Two 1955 portion diagrams list them: KLIPFONTEIN A (PAR-000083) on the south and south-west, KOPJES KRAAL and its ANNEX on the west, and WESTBOURNE on the east. Kopjes Kraal No. 123 is documented in this project from 1859 to 1934, so Minnies Kraal sits against ground already written up. The same sheets show the farm cut into at least SIX portions and a remainder by 1955, and they name a feature on the southern boundary - SCHURFTEKOPJES - which this project has not held before. None of it answers who Minnie was: 1955 is a century too late. LEAD-0071.

[9 Aug 2026] WHY THE PORTIONS OF THIS FARM FALL SHORT, AND BY EXACTLY HOW MUCH. checks.py reports farm 112's portions summing to 8,183.8 ha against this row's 9,628.3, which is 15% under. The 1955 deduction table on DOC-0240 settles what the eight portions are: they total 9,576.4082 MORGEN = 8,202.5 ha, and the modern polygons come to 8,183.8, which is 0.23% apart. EVERY ONE OF THE EIGHT AGREES WITH ITS MODERN POLYGON to within 1.1%, so nothing is double-counted and nothing is mis-converted. THE SHORTFALL IS A NINTH PIECE THIS MODEL DOES NOT HOLD: 1,444.5 ha, or 1,686 morgen, which is the REMAINDER of farm 112 left after the 1955 campaign cut Gedeeltes 1 to 8 out of it. There is no RE/112 row here. LEAD-0139.

That also confirms a reading DOC-0240 had flagged as uncertain. Its table gives Gedeelte 2 as "read here as 1330,7620" morgen; the modern polygon for Portion 2 is 1,147.5 ha = 1,339.8 morgen, 0.67% away, so the reading stands.
