THE WELBEDAGT MAN. MOOC8/50.101a and 50.101b (SRC-467): the estate of MARTHINUS OOSTHUYSEN JANSZ, taxed at the Weeskamer on 21 September 1792 and inventoried on the farm itself on 18 May 1792, leaving his widow HESTER CICILIA OLIVIER and five children - Anna Cicilia 16, Ockert Johannes 14, Marthinus Rudolph 10, Hester Hendrina 7, Willem Maartensz 3.

HIS PLACE IS THE LOAN PLACE WELBEDAGT, 'gelegen inde Attaquascloof aan de Oliphants Rivier', opstal Rd 133:16, with TEN YEARS AND SIX MONTHS of arrear recognitie penningen owed to the Company - so held from about 1782. The farm inventory is signed 'Aan de Oliphants Rivier op voorn: plaatz den 18 Maij 1792' and TWO OF ITS THREE APPRAISERS ARE OOSTHUYSENS.

'JANSZ' IS HIS FATHER: the shared export (SRC-464) gives him JAN HENDRIK OOSTHUIZEN, PER-001828, a brother of PER-000230. So this man is a FIRST COUSIN of Ockert (PER-000118) and the Oosthuysens on the southern Olifants are not a coincidence of surname. LEAD-0224.

THE DEATH DATE IS THE INVENTORY'S OWN DATE and the export takes it from there, so export and MOOC8 are not independent here. Neither his widow nor any of the five children is in the export. [TO VERIFY]

[22 Sep 2026, SRC-665] APPEL: a 'Jan Oosthuysen (jr.)' farmed 'Webedagt aan die Rietfontein' for almost a quarter century and by April 1778 was so poor he could not pay 13 years and 11 months of arrears on the loan farm; the government let him suspend payment (RLR 18 p. 19). If Appel's Webedagt is this man's Welbedagt (PAR-000277), the farm passed from a Jan Oosthuysen - his father or his elder brother - to him by about 1782.

[22 Sep 2026] HIS HOLDING BEGINS ABOUT MARCH 1782, from the 10 years 6 months of arrear recognitiepenninge in his own estate - the year his brother Johannes (PER-000739) died. LEAD-0362.

[22 Sep 2026, SRC-669] THE 'M. OOSTHUIZEN' OF THE REGISTER, 1780-1783, IS HIM. RLR 27 p. 67 puts an M. Oosthuizen on Welbedagt from 1780; he was 37, married since 30 May 1773 to HESTER CICILIA OLIVIER, and the previous holder is OCKERT OLIVIER, ordinansiehouer from 1772 (PER-002081) - the place moves with the marriage. His own estate of 1792 was taken on that farm and its arrears run from about 1782. The other Marthinus here, PER-000241 (d. about 1799, married Johanna Jacomina), is not on this ground.

[2026-09-23] The English reading of MOOC8/50.101a-b now stands beside the Afrikaans one, DOC-0378. His daughter Anna Cicilia's estate of 1811 (MOOC8/59.12, DOC-0375) is read; the identification rests on the naming pattern and the tree [TO VERIFY].

What the record is missing

Welbedagt No. 150 (Attaquaskloof, Oudtshoorn) was worked as far as 1792-05-18, with Marthinus OosthuizenL (b.1743) the last owner on record. 234 years follow with nothing. Who held it after that, and is it still one farm?

What would settle it The current title deed traced backwards, each transfer names the one before it, or the Surveyor-General's subdivision diagrams, which are what usually explain a farm going quiet.

DOC-0375 (MOOC8/59.12a and 59.12b, 1811-02-01) lists a household's whole movable estate, which means officials went to where that household lived. It says “Graaff-Reinet district; the estate had sold the opstal of Van Wykskraal aan de Oliphants Rivier” and no more. No parcel is attached, so the family it describes sits nowhere on the map.

What would settle it The inventory's own heading usually names the farm and the field-cornetcy; where it does not, the deceased's quitrent or opgaaf entry for that year will. This is the shape that produced the de Bruin/Rondabel find.
