Research notes

[SRC-669] ORDINANSIEHOUER OF WELBEDAGT aan die Olifantsrivier in 1772, the permit re-issued in 1777 (RLR 22 pp. 49-50), on the ground that passed to M. Oosthuizen in 1780. He is very probably the OCKERT OLIVIER D'OUDE who helped appraise Marthinus OosthuysenM's estate on that same farm on 18 May 1792 and whom the estate owed 13 rixdollars (SRC-467, INV-0030) [TO VERIFY]. Marthinus's wife was HESTER CICILIA OLIVIER, so the farm and the marriage run together. Admitted under 6 as a person tied to the land: a holder named in the register, with no claim about his own family.

[22 Sep 2026, SRC-669] ALSO ON THE LOAN PLACE ARMOED IN 1765 (PAR-000338), 'onder aan de Sand plaats rivier, digt aan die Olifants rivier, agter de Hattequas kloof' - the ground between Jacobus OosthuizenL's Gamthous Bergh and the Welbedagt he himself took up by 1772. IN THE PUBLISHED MOOC8 HE HAS NO ESTATE OF HIS OWN, and appears five times as a neighbour: appraising Marthinus OosthuysenM's estate on Welbedagt on 18 May 1792 as 'Okker Olivier de oude' and again at the Weeskamer in September, where the estate owes him 13 rixdollars (MOOC8/50.101a-b); appraising the Hoehne estate on Eilandsfontein in the Langkloof in 1795 (MOOC8/51.39a); and as 'Ockert Olivier DE JONGE' on Krakeelrivier in 1796 (MOOC8/51.49a) - a second man of the name. The 1804 estate of Margaretha Aletta Heijns, wife of the burgher Ockert Olivier, on the loan place Twee Rivieren in the Langkloof, names a third, her son Ockert aged 4 (MOOC8/55.46a). THE OLIVIERS ARE A LANGKLOOF FAMILY, over the mountain from this ground, and an 'Ockert Olivier' in a register needs its date attached. [TO VERIFY] which of them held Welbedagt.

What the record is missing

On Welbedagt No. 150 (Attaquaskloof, Oudtshoorn), Johannes OosthuisenM is the last owner recorded from 1753~, and the next entry is Ockert Olivier d'oude from 1772, 19 years later, with no person in common. No document records the handover at all.

What would settle it The Deeds Office transfer register for this farm between 1753 and 1772. A transfer names its predecessor in title, so one deed closes the whole gap.

A boundary description for Gamthous Bergh (Gamtoosberg No. 170, Oudtshoorn) names the farm of A. Olivier, a surveyor stating on the record that this person held the adjoining ground. We do hold Olivier tenure elsewhere, but none on this boundary and none at this date.

What would settle it The diagram's own date fixes the window. The quitrent or erfpacht register for that year names the holder of the adjoining place, and an estate inventory will name the farm outright.
