29 Jul 2026 [SRC-089] Four Malherbes stood at her son's baptism in 1909, among them HENDRIK LODEWIJK MALHERBE and ISABELLA JOHANNA MALHERBE - almost certainly her parents, on the naming pattern (her first son took his father's father's name, her second son took HERS, and her first daughter was Isabella). See PER-000284 and PER-000285.

[15 Aug 2026, SRC-443] HER LAST YEARS, FROM HER GRANDSON. [FAMILY] Christiaan Johannes Joubert OosthuizenM (PER-000018), shown the photograph of her in old age (MED-000055), answered that he remembers little of her - he was seven when she died - and that by the end she was confused, with dementia; that she fell and broke a hip, or broke the hip and fell, he is not sure which way round; and that she did not recover. She died on 14 September 1959, aged eighty-four.

THE ORDER OF THE FALL AND THE FRACTURE IS LEFT OPEN because he left it open, and nothing here settles it. Her death record has not been read; when it is, it may or may not speak to this.

[16 Aug 2026, FAMILY] SHE GREW UP IN THE HOUSE AT TULBAGH shown in MED-000060, her father's house, inscribed on the back as the Malherbe huis. Recorded as PLC-000082. Her birth at Tulbagh on 31 May 1875 agrees with it. The photograph reads as the 1890s, when she was in her twenties, so a woman on that stoep may well be her - which is a thing to test against her other portraits, not a caption. [TO VERIFY]

[16 Aug 2026, SRC-448] SHE WAS TRAINED AS A TEACHER AT THE HUGUENOT SEMINARY, WELLINGTON. A testimonial signed by the principal, A. P. Ferguson, in March 1896 certifies two years at the Seminary and recommends her "heartily as a teacher". She was twenty.

THE YEAR 1900 TOOK TWO OF HER BROTHERS: Jan at Spioenkop in January and Izak at Pietersheuwel in February. Her father died on 3 January 1901. She married Almero Jacobus Hitge OosthuizenL in May 1903.

A photograph of Izak Malherbe [97LH-84V] and Katriena Pepler [2CBY-7BD], made about the 1860s, is the oldest picture in this project. Both are now rows here. WHERE DO THEY SIT? The obvious hypothesis is that Izak stands above Hendrik Lodewyk MalherbeL [PER-000755, 1828-1901], Frans's 2x-great-grandfather - but nothing here establishes it.

What would settle it The FamilySearch profiles, or a baptism naming Izak as father of Hendrik Lodewyk.
Who are the two women on the negative of 4 December 1925? priority 1 · LEAD-0209
A strip of negatives inscribed "P.A. Dec. 4, 1925" holds at least three frames: two women in a garden, an old woman feeding fowls in a farmyard, and a third Frans has shown but not yet filed. Who is the old woman, and who is the younger one standing behind her?

What would settle it A frame from the same strip that carries a name, or a second photograph of Lettie Hitge after 1920 to compare a face against.

The back of MED-000060 is inscribed, naming it the Malherbe house at Tulbagh, and this project holds only the front. What exactly does the inscription say, in whose hand, and does it name a street, a date or any of the people on the stoep?

What would settle it An image of the verso, filed as its own row under the sheet-is-a-row rule; and separately a street, which is what PLC-000082 needs before it can carry a coordinate.
