VERBATIM, as sent, in Afrikaans: "Ek onthou min van haar, was nog te klein en sy was later maar deurmekaar - demensie. Sy het geval en heup gebreek (of andersom). Op end nie herstel nie." | HE IS HER GRANDSON AND HE DATES HIS OWN LIMIT. He was born 7 January 1952 and she died 14 September 1959, so he was seven; "was nog te klein" is not modesty, it is the correct description of what a seven-year-old can hold. What he carries is the household's account of her last years rather than his own observation of them, and it should be read as that. | HE MARKS HIS OWN UNCERTAINTY and it is kept: "(of andersom)" - whether she fell and broke the hip or the hip went and she fell. Sixty-seven years on that order is exactly the thing memory loses first, and the honest record is the one that says so. | The photograph was sent to him because this project had just catalogued it; the reply is what a photograph is for.
