Isaak Johannes Malherbe

Died at Colenso, Natal, on 27 February 1900 - the day Buller finally forced the Tugela and the day Cronje surrendered at Paardeberg. Brother of Johanna Fredricka MalherbeM [PER-000140] and of Johannes Barnard MalherbeM, who had died five weeks earlier. Two sons of one Tulbagh household, dead in Natal inside thirty-four days. [7 Aug 2026] VERY PROBABLY THE 'Isaac Malherbe' OF DENEYS REITZ'S COMMANDO (SRC-331), the corporal Reitz calls the bravest of them all, killed with his whole corporalship at Pieters Heights above Colenso on 27 February 1900 - the day this man died, at that place. THE OPEN OBJECTION: a modern account calls Reitz's corporal 25 years old, and a birth of 29 August 1859 makes this man forty. Reitz himself gives no ages. Recorded as a conflict, not resolved.

[7 Aug 2026, FROM FAMILYSEARCH] GHVV-1KB confirms birth at Tulbagh 29 August 1859 and death at Colenso, Natal, on 27 February 1900. He married twice - Maria Carolina van Schoor in 1884, who died in 1892, and Petronella Aletta Pienaar. THE AGE OBJECTION STANDS: FamilySearch puts his birth in 1859, so he was forty, and the secondary account of Reitz's corporalship calls its leader 25. FamilySearch does not settle it either way. *** [14 Aug 2026, SRC-437 - THE MEMOIR ITSELF, SEARCHED IN FULL, AND IT STRENGTHENS THIS IDENTIFICATION WITHOUT CLOSING THE AGE OBJECTION.] *** THREE THINGS IT ESTABLISHES. (1) Reitz says FIVE BROTHERS NAMED MALHERBE were the leading spirits of the body his Pretoria group merged into, and that they chose ISAAC, THE ELDEST OF THEM, as corporal. This model holds four Malherbe brothers of one Tulbagh household - Isaak Johannes 1859, Johannes Barnard 1862, Hendrik Lodewyk 1867, Petrus Jacobus 1871 - and THIS MAN IS THE ELDEST OF THEM, which is the specific thing Reitz says about his corporal. (2) Reitz names only TWO Malherbes in the whole book: ISAAC, twenty-six times, and JOHN ONCE - and John appears as 'our Corporal's brother', found dead on Spion Kop. PER-001551 Johannes Barnard MalherbeM died 24 January 1900, the day after Reitz sat at the fires below that hill. Two brothers, two deaths, both matching. (3) THE AGE OBJECTION IS NOT ANSWERED AND CANNOT BE FROM THIS BOOK: Reitz gives no age for any Malherbe anywhere in 624,000 characters, so the modern account's '25' is not his and is not contradicted by him either. It remains a conflict between a secondary account and a FamilySearch birth date, and it stays open. NOTE WHAT IS STILL NOT PROVEN: that the Tulbagh household is the Pretoria one. Reitz's men were of Pretoria and these brothers were born at Tulbagh, which is ordinary for the period and is not evidence either way.

THIS ROW NO LONGER CARRIES THE IDENTIFICATION AS PROBABLE. It is this family's Isaak Johannes MalherbeH, born Tulbagh 29 August 1859, killed at Colenso 27 February 1900, who is the Isaac Malherbe of Reitz's corporalship. THE AGE DISCREPANCY IS NOT ERASED and is still stated on S032: a modern secondary retelling calls the corporal twenty-five, against a baptismal date of 1859. What has changed is where the doubt sits - on that account rather than on this man - and the grounds are three. Reitz gives no age for anyone named Malherbe anywhere in the book, so the number is not his. Reitz says his corporal was THE ELDEST of five brothers, and this man is the eldest of the four this model holds. And Frans's own point, which is the kind of judgement a record should take from the person who knows the world it describes: men do not elect a boy to lead them.

[16 Aug 2026, SRC-445/446/447] "IZAK", AND "BOETIE" TO HIS BROTHERS. THE ELDEST OF THE FOUR, and the corporalship of the Pretoria commando was named for him - "die korporaalskap van Izak Malherbe". Deneys Reitz, who rode in it, writes of him with high praise in COMMANDO.

KILLED AT PIETERSHEUWEL ON 27 FEBRUARY 1900, five weeks after his brother Jan, and buried in the trenches of that battlefield. The family birthday book records it as "Feb. 27, 1900. Boetie killed". Between the two deaths he carried Jan's body to Pretoria and went to Johannesburg to greet his wife and his two sons of thirteen and fourteen, then went straight back to Natal.

HIS OWN LETTER OF 5 OCTOBER 1899, written the same evening as Jan's and to the same sister: "Nou ja, should I be killed you must look well after Issie & Annie because I don't want Nellie to be bothered with the children." SRC-445.

[17 Aug 2026] CALLED IZAK, and BOETIE by his brothers - he signs "Izak" on SRC-445 and Pieter writes "Boetie (Izak)" in SRC-446. The formal name is Isaak Johannes. Both everyday forms are recorded; Izak is the one he used himself.
