Research notes
[SRC-597] Father of Lodewyk BothmaH (PER-000037), who held Spreeufontein when the first gold came out of it. Married HUIBRECHT CLOETE at Cape Town on 3 November 1782; thirteen children. His own parents were Stephanus BotmaH (1730-1789) and ALETTA FRANSINA MOUTON (1734-1797), married at Tulbagh on 6 May 1753, and that grandmother's name is why every branch of this family carries an Aletta Francina.
[SRC-599] Named as his son's patronymic in the Worcester register of 1821, which is the first evidence for this parentage outside a compiled tree.
[SRC-600] AT TULBAGH IN 1794, baptising a daughter Christina born 30 September that year, with Jacob CloeteM and Johanna Hendrina Cloete as witnesses. Two of his brothers, Lodewijk and Jan Daniel, baptise on the same opening and witness for each other.
[SRC-602] His son's death notice names him STEPHANUS JACOBUS BOTMA, and a man of exactly that name stands godparent at the same son's baptism in 1802 (SRC-603). SRC-601 has him as 'Stephanus BotmaH, Steph:s Son, Sr'. None of these forms is applied to the display name, which follows FamilySearch under 5a-i. [TO VERIFY] whether the middle name is his or a namesake's.
*** [SRC-601] HE WAS NOT ON SPREEUFONTEIN. *** His widow was living in the Middel Roggeveld at her death in 1837, seven years after his own, and the farm in this district first appears under his son.
