*** [20 Aug 2026, SRC-497] HE HOLDS OCKERTS KRAAL IN 1805 - the first ground this row has ever carried. *** Frans aligned images 39 and 40 of the 1805 Swellendam roll: OCKERTS KRAAL falls on entry 773, whose wife is SUSANNA LA GRANSIE, PER-000516, his own wife. The farm is SWELLENDAM 502 in the cadastre.

HE IS OCKERT JACOBUS'S BROTHER, both sons of PER-000230, which makes this level-1 ground under LEVELS.md and not a neighbour's farm.

AND HE IS THE 'GERT OOSTHUIJSEN' OF THE PAARL FONT: with Susanna Lagransie he stood godparent to his nephew GERT ADRIAAN (PER-000145) in October 1799, the boy named for him (SRC-519).

[2026-09-23, SRC-680] *** HIS WIFE'S ESTATE, MOOC8/57.36a-b, 23 September 1808. *** Widower of SUSANNA LA GRANGE; seven children: Gerrit (of age), Dina Carolina (married to Marthinus OosthuysenM M:zn, her first cousin, son of PER-000241), Jacobus 15, Susanna 13, Jan 10, Johanna 8, Jacoba Hendrica 5. TWO LOAN PLACES: the home place BUFFELSKLOOF 'gelegen over de Plattekloof' (opstal Rd 1666:32; 5000 gulden by the neighbours) and OKKERSKRAAL 'aan de Groote Rivier onder de Wagendrift' (Rd 150; PAR-000324, OWN-000128). 23 trek oxen, 95 cattle, 600 sheep, 450 goats, a forge, and six enslaved people named on the sheet. Net Rd 6073:32, the richest of the brothers. Buffelskloof is one of three Ladismith farms of the name [TO VERIFY].

What would settle it The page read at a scale where the patronymic flourishes resolve, with the collection and year read off the breadcrumb. That would give this project a documented way of telling the Jacobszoon line from the Marthinuszoon line in every roll of the period, which is worth more than any single entry on the page.

Ockert Jacobus OosthuizenL (PER-000118) married SUSANNA CATHARINA VAN TONDER on 26 January 1783. The opgaafrol index at SRC-482 shows another Oosthuizen household, entry 430, headed by a GERRET with the wife JOH: VAN TONDEREN. Are the two wives sisters, and is that Gerret one of Ockert's brothers?

What would settle it A baptism or marriage record naming both van Tonder women as daughters of the same father, together with the Gerret of entry 430 identified by patronymic.

On Ockerts Kraal No. 200 (Ladismith), Gerrit Johannes OosthuizenH is the last owner recorded from ../1808-09-23, and the next entry is Stephanus A. ForieM from 1838-11-01, 30 years later, with no person in common. DOC-0347 records the later arrival but not the 30 years before it.

What would settle it The Deeds Office transfer register for this farm between 1808 and 1838. A transfer names its predecessor in title, so one deed closes the whole gap.
