Research notes

Klaarstroom No. 184 surveyed for him Aug 1833, titled 15 Apr 1841. The field cornetcy itself was "C. HattingM" - he was the field cornet of the district in which Middelwater also lay.

29 Jul 2026 [SRC-083] "C. HattingM" appears in the left margin of the 1837 Beaufort West baptism of Ockert Almero OosthuizenL. The same column across the page carries A.F. Smit, M.A. DE BEER, S.G. Mocke, P.E. KrugerM, H.P. v.d. Westhuise, C.F. de Clerk and P.J. Janse van Vuuren - a list of surnames-with-initials that reads exactly like VELDKORNETTE, not like godparents or ministers. If that is what the column is, THE BEAUFORT WEST BAPTISM REGISTER RECORDS THE FIELD CORNETCY, which is the residential unit - and this entry would place the family in C. HattingM's ward in 1836, the same ward the 1833 Middelwater diagram sits in. That would be the single most useful methodological find in the project so far. [TO VERIFY - read the column header on the facing page, and test it against families whose ward is independently known.]

What would settle it The current title deed traced backwards, each transfer names the one before it, or the Surveyor-General's subdivision diagrams, which are what usually explain a farm going quiet.

On Botterkraal (Jansenskraal No. 104 Ptn 2), Christian Hatting SeniorH is the last owner recorded from 1841-04-15, and the next entry is P.H. du PlessisM from 1868-11-17, 27 years later, with no person in common. DOC-0297 records the later arrival but not the 27 years before it.

What would settle it The Deeds Office transfer register for this farm between 1841 and 1868. A transfer names its predecessor in title, so one deed closes the whole gap.
“Land granted to C. Hatting 15 April 1841” held ground next door and we have no tenure for them third order · B4 unheld-owner
A boundary description for Venters Kloof Annex No. 183 names Land granted to C. HattingM 15 April 1841, a surveyor stating on the record that this person held the adjoining ground. We do hold Hatting tenure elsewhere, but none on this boundary and none at this date.

What would settle it The diagram's own date fixes the window. The quitrent or erfpacht register for that year names the holder of the adjoining place, and an estate inventory will name the farm outright.
