Research notes

[31 Jul 2026 inbox] The loan farm Klein Valie (PAR-000088) was surveyed for him in August 1833 (DOC-0119). 'Junior', in the field cornetcy of C. HattingM - father and son is the obvious reading and is NOT asserted. Whoever holds the 1841 grant of No. 182 is not on the sheet we have.

[17 Sep 2026] VERY PROBABLY THE FIELD CORNET (PER-000495) and the same man: the Beaufort roll of 1824 (SRC-634) names the veldcornet 'Christiaan HattingM Diedriks Zoon' x Margaretha Isabella Botha, with 'Kleine Valey' on his row, and the roll of 1822 (SRC-559) lists the veldcornet apart from 'Christiaan HattingM d'oude' (PER-000055). Not merged: the join is a farm name and a ward, not a record naming both [TO VERIFY].

What the record is missing

On Klein Valie No. 182, Christian Hatting JuniorH (Klein Valie, 1833) is the last owner recorded from ../1833, and the next entry is Ockert Almero OosthuizenL from ../1878, 45 years later, with no person in common. No document records the handover at all.

What would settle it The Deeds Office transfer register for this farm between 1833 and 1878. A transfer names its predecessor in title, so one deed closes the whole gap.
“Land granted to C. Hatting 15 April 1841” held ground next door and we have no tenure for them third order · B4 unheld-owner
A boundary description for Venters Kloof Annex No. 183 names Land granted to C. HattingM 15 April 1841, a surveyor stating on the record that this person held the adjoining ground. We do hold Hatting tenure elsewhere, but none on this boundary and none at this date.

What would settle it The diagram's own date fixes the window. The quitrent or erfpacht register for that year names the holder of the adjoining place, and an estate inventory will name the farm outright.
