The van der Merwes come south to the Prince Albert district
The maternal line does NOT come out of the Prince Albert district. Three generations sit in the northern Karoo - Van Wyksvlei (b.1891), Bokvlakte (b.1900), Calvinia (m.1917), Williston (b.1928, m.1949). It is Frans Jacobus Wilhelmus van der Merwe and Maria Magritha van Rensburg who move south to VRE

Afrikaans naming repeats hard, and the Cape Dutch naming pattern reuses a name on purpose, a child who died young has the name given again to a later sibling. These are different people. Never match on a name alone.

Research notes
Frans's maternal grandfather. Born Brandvlei; died on his 44th birthday. NOTE three men of this exact name in the tree (1863, 1869, 1924) - this is
[31 Jul 2026] [FAMILY] Came from the farm BIESIES in the Calvinia district (PLC-000036) - Frans's own words, "frans came from farm bieses in cavinia". That refines 'born Brandvlei' rather than replacing it: Brandvlei is in the Calvinia district, so one is the ground and the other the town it registered at. He married Maria Magritha van RensburgH (PER-000013) at Williston on 17 Jan 1949 and died on his 44th birthday, 8 Apr 1968; she was widowed that day and later married Gert Annis 'Tokkie' Marincowitz (PER-000007), who is therefore Frans's STEP-grandfather and not a blood ancestor.
[4 Aug 2026, SRC-263] PLACED IN THE PUBLISHED VAN DER MERWE GENEALOGY. Janet Melville's descendant report gives him the descent code a1b3c10d2e8f1g1h1i7j2k2, which ties this line to the Van der Merwe stamvader through Schalk Willem Burger van der MerweM of Ou Muur, Calvinia (1833-1904). It confirms what this model already holds - born Williston 8 Apr 1924, died Prince Albert 8 Apr 1968, on the same day of the year - and adds one fact the model did not carry: he is recorded as LIVING AT VREDENDAL, PRINCE ALBERT (PAR-000006). That residence is the join between a Calvinia genealogy and this project.
[10 Aug 2026, SRC-374] HIS BIRTHPLACE IS DISPUTED AND BOTH READINGS STAND. Melville has him born at WILLISTON on 8 April 1924; this model holds Brandvlei, from the family-tree. All ten of his siblings are recorded born at Williston, which makes Williston the likelier of the two, and Melville works from registers. Neither is the register itself. LEAD-0155.
These are working notes, not finished prose: they carry the reasoning, the corrections and the things still marked to verify. They are kept here so the page itself can read as what is known.

Which of the two Karoo Hoogland farms called Biesies is the family's?
priority 1 · LEAD-0156
Irish 1996 keys collecting locality 384 to 'Biesies' and gives coordinates for other sites in the same survey but not in this part. Where is his numbered locality list, and what coordinate does it give 384?
What would settle it Frans saying which side of Williston the farm lies, or Irish's numbered locality gazetteer, entry 384.

Where Biesies stands, and whether the Fraserburg one is the family farm
priority 2 · LEAD-0175
Which of the three candidate Biesies is the farm Frans Jacobus Wilhelmus van der MerweL (PER-000030) came off before 1950?
What would settle it A deed, a death notice or a photograph caption tying PER-000030 or his father to a named Biesies, OR a Fraserburg cadastral pull that fixes the six neighbours.
