Their eldest son is Johannes OosthuisenM, PER-000739, FS LVZR-B4P. Added under the story route of 6: he is a subject of S040, and a man named in a published piece needs a record for the citation to attach to. FamilySearch L6FC-QKQ, 27 sources on the person. BIRTH: christened 4 November 1714 at Paarl, Drakenstein - FamilySearch carries two sources for the christening and two for the birth, both a baptism record, and gives the birth as 'before 4 November 1714'. Recorded here as 1714 because the year extractor takes YYYY and the day is on this row rather than in the field. DEATH: BEFORE 31 MARCH 1780, and the story of that date is worth keeping. FamilySearch DISPLAYS 1772, and this project briefly recorded it. IT IS WRONG, and the card says so itself: the death field carries ZERO SOURCES and its stated Reason is 'MOOC8/49.20, Jan Oosthuijse, 31 Maart 1780'. A contributor entered 1772 while citing a document dated 1780. It is not independent evidence at all - it is derived from the same inventory the private tree's bound comes from, and derived wrongly. So the only defensible reading is the bound: dead by 31 March 1780, when his widow Ana Boota gave in her goods (SRC-432). THAT RESTORES HIM TO THE 1775 ROLL. Nothing now dates him out of SRC-423, where 'Jan Oosthuijsen d'oude' is settled on the Sneeuwberg in July 1775. See LEAD-0182 for what does and does not support the identification. WHAT THE FAMILY LEAVES ON THE NORTHERN FRONTIER: his daughter JOHANNA PETRONELLA (1762-1792, FS LBS6-8HS) dies on the loan place de Groote Dam 'agter de Sneeuwbergen' (SRC-433); his granddaughter MARIA ELIZABETH (b.1763, FS MNRR-THD) marries ANDRIES HENDRIK KRUGEL (FS LH28-LYP) and baptises JOHANNES GIDEON HENDRIK KRUGEL (1792-1863, FS 2CBR-3LY) at Graaff-Reinet in 1792; and his granddaughter ALETTA JOHANNA SUSANNA is PER-000049 of MOOC8/38.12, the Rondabel-in-Tarka inventory this project already held.

Verouderd: hieronder beantwoord [22 Sep 2026, SRC-665] APPEL: a 'Jan Oosthuysen (jr.)' farmed 'Webedagt aan die Rietfontein' for almost a quarter century and by April 1778 was so poor he could not pay 13 years and 11 months of arrears on the loan farm; the government let him suspend payment (RLR 18 p. 19). WHICH JAN IS OPEN (LEAD-0362). The DATES fit this man: a holding from about 1753 fits a man born 1714, and he is the only Jan on the 1751 Swellendam roll; his widow's inventory of March 1780 (SRC-432) has no loan place and no opstal, which is what a man who lost his farm in 1778 would leave. The LABEL fits his son (PER-000739), 'd'jonge' on the rolls from 1760.

[22 Sep 2026] NOT the Jan of Appel's 1778 entry: Frans settled it on his son Johannes (PER-000739). This man is 'Jan d'oude' of the Swellendam rolls and was dead by 31 March 1780. LEAD-0362 closed.
