Navorsingsnotas
THE STAMVADER - the first of this family at the Cape, Frans's 7x-GREAT-grandfather, and the head of everything in this project. [SRC-095] The VOC muster has him enter service as an ADELBORST on 13 May 1685, sail with the LAND VAN SCHOUWEN, and leave the Company's service at the CAPE OF GOOD HOPE on 15 AUGUST 1690, reason: VRIJBURGER. He sailed on a SCHULDBRIEF - passage and kit advanced against wages - so he left with nothing. [SRC-096] The ship left Texel 13 May 1685 and anchored at the Cape on 17 SEPTEMBER 1685, 127 days out. ORIGIN DISPUTED, five ways. The VOC index says WOERDEN (Utrecht). The soldijboek behind it is reported to say WERDEN - now part of Essen, Germany. HIS OWN WILL OF 1722 (CJ 2601) is reported to say WEERL, most likely WERL in Westphalia [SRC-100]. Hoge and Zoellner both list him as a German from Werden [SRC-099]. Published registers variously say Weert, and the 1946 armorial says Wierden. On the weight of it he was probably a GERMAN in Dutch service, one of thousands the Thirty Years' War pushed west - but this is NOT SETTLED [TO VERIFY]. BIRTH YEAR: the compiled sources give 1665, c.1670, 1672 and 1675 and cannot all be right. An adelborst in May 1685 was in his mid-teens at the youngest, which makes 1675 impossible and 1672 a stretch. Recorded here as the range 1665/1672 rather than a false precision. [SRC-097] SAG has him settling at DRAKENSTEIN IN 1691 as a free immigrant on the same terms offered the Huguenots - sixty morgen rent-free, passage paid, all produce to be sold to the Company, five years' minimum stay. That is one year after his discharge and reconciles cleanly: burgher in August 1690, on the land in 1691. Married Johanna Maartens; the register of 22 Nov 1722 [SRC-094] writes them JAN and JANNETJE. Died before 4 November 1730. WHICH DUTCH BAPTISM IS HIS? NEITHER, ON THE NAMING EVIDENCE. Two candidate records exist: AMSTERDAM [SRC-101], Johannes son of Johannes Oosthuijsz x Catrina Bouwmans (the one Frans's tree follows, dated 1672); and LEIDEN, 31 March 1675 [SRC-102], Johannes son of Johannes Oosthuysen x Antonette de Rede (which is probably where FamilySearch's 1675 comes from). was to test them against the children's names, and it works. THE FAMILY DEMONSTRABLY FOLLOWED THE VERNOEMINGSPATROON. Of the six naming slots, three can be checked independently and all three hold: the 2nd son should take the mother's father's name and is MARTINUS - and the mother is Johanna MAARTENS, a patronymic meaning daughter of Maarten; the 3rd son should take the father's own name and is JAN Hendrik; the 3rd daughter should take the mother's own name and is JANNETJE. Three for three. THAT MAKES THE REMAINING TWO SLOTS PREDICTIONS. The 1st son takes the father's father's name and is GERHARDUS. The 2nd daughter takes the father's mother's name and is BARBARA. So the stamvader's own parents should be GERHARDUS OOSTHUYSEN and BARBARA. BOTH CANDIDATES FAIL, AND FAIL THE SAME WAY: each has a father named JOHANNES, which would require the first son to be Johannes, and neither mother is Barbara. If either record were his, the eldest son would be Jan, not Gerhardus. AND THE PREDICTED NAMES POINT WHERE THE WILL DOES. Gerhardus and Barbara are Rhineland and Westphalian names - Barbara, patroness of miners, far commoner in the Catholic Ruhr than in Holland. That is a SECOND, COMPLETELY INDEPENDENT LINE OF EVIDENCE pointing at Werden or Werl rather than Woerden or Leiden [SRC-099, SRC-100]. This is a hypothesis, not a finding - the pattern generates leads, it never proves parentage. But it gives a specific thing to look for: A GERHARDUS (GERRIT/GERARDUS) OOSTHUYSEN MARRIED TO A BARBARA, WITH A SON JOHANNES BORN ABOUT 1665-1672, in or near Werden (Essen), Werl, or Woerden - and if the German reading is right, in a CATHOLIC register, not a Dutch Reformed one. As a by-product the same test names the stammoeder's parents: MAARTEN x ANNA. PATERNAL CHAIN VERIFIED 29 Jul 2026 by walking the male line in Frans's own tree: Frans (1979) < Christiaan Johannes Joubert (1952) < Hendrik Lodewyk MalherbeL (1909) < Almero Jacobus Hitge (1878) < Ockert Almero (1836) < Johannes Adriaan (1816) < Ockert Almero (1786) < Ockert (1755) < Jacobus (d.1802) < JOHANNES THE STAMVADER. NINE FATHER-TO-SON STEPS, and the middle five are each corroborated by an original baptism or death record already in this model (1755, 1786, 1817, 1837, 1878, 1909, 1922). This is an unbroken documented Y-line.
[6 Aug 2026] MERGED PER-000559 into this row. FamilySearch merged GW32-G7M into LCJN-657 on 19 October 2024, and Frans sent the deleted-person screen that says so: 'This person was deleted by merge. Surviving person: Johannes Oosthuijsz. ID numbers: GW32-G7M and LCJN-657.' The stamvader was in this model twice. PER-000559 was made on 31 Jul 2026 by the kin_sweep one-degree pull, which matched on tree id alone, and the stamvader carries none - so the root of this project was duplicated by the very rule meant to extend it. Identical death, same wife, same son. The surviving id is the one PER-000296 already held. LEAD-0113. Moved across: tree id=. DISAGREEMENTS, kept rather than resolved - the FamilySearch id settles these in one click: display_name: kept 'Johannes "Jan" Oosthuijsz (stamvader)', PER-000559 said 'Johannes Oosthuizen'; given: kept 'Johannes', PER-000559 said 'Oosthuysen van Weert'; surname: kept 'Oosthuijsz', PER-000559 said 'Oosthuizen'; birth_edtf: kept '1665/1672', PER-000559 said '1672'; familysearch_id: kept 'LCJN-657', PER-000559 said 'GW32-G7M'. Retired ids kept for the trail: FamilySearch GW32-G7M - a merged FamilySearch id still resolves, so it remains a usable door.

The stamvader's parents
prioriteit 1 · LEAD-0001
Who were the parents of Johannes "Jan" Oosthuijsz (PER-000296), the progenitor?
Wat dit sou uitmaak A baptism or marriage naming Gerhardus Oosthuysen and Barbara with a son Johannes in the right window, PLUS corroboration that the child is the man who enlisted on 13 May 1685 - the surname alone cannot carry it. CJ 2601 (the 1722 will) narrowing the birthplace to one parish would do most of that work.

Woerden, Werden or Werl - which of the five candidate home towns is right?
Wat dit sou uitmaak READING CJ 2601, HIS 1722 WILL. It is the only one of the five sources in which he speaks about himself. Second best: the soldijboek folio, which is what the muster index was copied from.

Is the stamvader in this model twice - PER-000296 and PER-000559?
prioriteit 1 · LEAD-0113
PER-000296 Johannes "Jan" Oosthuijsz (stamvader) and PER-000559 Johannes Oosthuizen share an identical death date, share a wife, and one of them is the recorded father of the other's son. Are they one man, and if so which FamilySearch profile survives - LCJN-657 or GW32-G7M?
Wat dit sou uitmaak Either FamilySearch merges them, or one profile turns out to hold a source the other does not and they are two men.

Is GW32-G7M the Oosthuizen stamvader this model already holds, or an extra generation?
prioriteit 2 · LEAD-0171
The son's family-tree runs the Oosthuizen father-line Jacobus 1722-1802 -> Johannes Oosthuizen 1672-1730 (GW32-G7M) -> Johannes Oosthuizen 1648-1682. This model's stamvader is Johannes "Jan" Oosthuijsz, LCJN-657, born 1665. Same man, or a generation this project lacks?
Wat dit sou uitmaak Whether the two ids are one person on FamilySearch, or two.
