AN AUTHORED SECONDARY ACCOUNT; the originals are unseen. WHAT IT SAYS: LOUIS VAN WYK, son of Adriaan van Wijk and Sara Fourie, baptised Paarl 10 November 1726, married Hester de Jager 1751; in October 1760 got grazing rights on the loan place VERGELEGEN 'in die Cango agter de Cochemans Cloof' (Appel; RLR 16 p. 109), one of the first trekboers in the present Oudtshoorn district; lieutenant of the Swellendam burgher force to 1781. His son LOUIS VAN WYK DE JONGE (baptised Paarl 4 May 1755, married Martha Bekker) took OUDE MURASIE 'aan 't end van de Cango' on loan in 1781 and left it in 1786, when it passed to S. BEKKER; on 27 October 1786 he was appointed VELDWAGMEESTER AAN DE OLIFANTSRIVIER; in 1792 he asked for his attestation to be sent to Graaff-Reinet. The SWELLENDAM OPGAAFROL OF 1793 lists Louis de oude and his sons Louis de jonge and Carel Pieter van Wyk. WHY IT MATTERS HERE: (1) OCKERT OOSTHUIZEN'S MOTHER-IN-LAW, SUSANNA VAN WYK (b. 1725, wife of Cornelis van Tonderen, PER-000747), is by the private tree a daughter of Adriaan van Wyk and Sara Fourie, so LOUIS VAN WYK WAS SUSANNA CATHARINA VAN TONDER'S UNCLE and Louis de jonge her first cousin. (2) OUDE MURASIE is d'Oude Muragie, where Landdrost Faure's party signed four days before inventorying de Modder Fonteyn on 23 April 1809 (SRC-549, LEAD-0276), 28 uren from George in 1823 (SRC-638). (3) So the wife's own family held loan land on this river, and one of them policed it, a generation before Ockert is found there. (4) A Swellendam roll of 1793 exists, although the FamilySearch catalogue films none between 1788 and 1805 (LEAD-0299). (5) Appel's study and RLR 16 are the route to the Olifants loan places before 1809. Kinship [TREE]; the blog's facts [TO VERIFY] against Appel and RLR 16. Botha and Willem Piljee posts concern Swellendam-district contemporaries and do not touch this project's ground. | [17 Sep 2026] Appel's published article (SRC-658) was read in full: it does not name Louis van Wyk, Vergelegen or Oude Muragie, so the blog's reliance on Appel must be on his 1980 thesis.
