AN AUTHORED SECONDARY ACCOUNT: the quotations are the blogger's transcriptions of KAB CO 4008 p.32 and CO 4044 p.64, which this project has NOT seen; read the originals before relying on a quotation. WHAT IT SAYS, as the post gives it: on 23 August 1841 'Johan Nicolaas Welhellem Barkhuysen, H zoon' (Jan Barkhuysen, baptised Swellendam 1801, son of Johannes Cornelis Barkhuysen of Kliprivier) applied through an agent for the loan place ROODE KLIP, described as 'CONTIGUOUS TO THE PLACE MOSASFONTEIN [Moerasfontein], ORGIDA AND MISGUNST'. His letter says it had been a LOAN PLACE OF SALMON TERBLANS, WHO SOLD IT TO STEPHANUS ERASMUS (a brother of Daniel Jacobus Erasmus), who had trekked beyond the colony's borders without taking transfer. The Colonial Office replied that Salmon Terblans had held Roode Klip (9000 morgen) SINCE 30 JUNE 1832 at £2 rent (Fol 311), with arrears of £45.10, and on 11 May 1842 recommended that 'the farm Roode Klip and OUDEBOS granted to Salmon Terblans on the 30 June 1832' be declared forfeited for non-payment of land rents and sold. On 8 December 1842 Barkhuysen bought 'Rodeklip No 341' from J.B. Rudolph, agent of the late S.P. Erasmus, for £284; the transfer dues dispute ran to 1849; he died on Rooiklip in 1852 and Barkhuizens held it in 2012. Jan Barkhuysen married (2) on 5 October 1829 ANNA CATHARINA ERASMUS, daughter of DANIEL JACOBUS ('Oupa Swartkoppies') ERASMUS, who before trekking north FARMED WANHOOP, district Willowmore, 'very near Rooiklip', and settled on Swartkop (Centurion); a son was 'Daantjie Doornkloof'. The mission traveller Latrobe stayed at Kliprivier on 25 March 1816 and was driven by the young Jan to Kykoe. HOW IT JOINS THIS PROJECT'S EVIDENCE: (1) Salomon Terblans's grant of Roode Klip on 30 June 1832 matches the 1832 diagram 352/1832 (DOC-0359, 'applied for by Salomon Terblans Steph:zn', beside 'Loanplace Moerasfontyn'); (2) Daniel Jacobus Erasmus with Cornelia Kruger is the holder of 'Moeras/Modder Fontyn' in the George rolls of 1824-1826 (data/opgaaf_land.csv, SRC-641, SRC-642, SRC-648); the private tree has a Daniel Jacobus Erasmus born 30 June 1785, died 5 October 1861, married to Cornelia Jacoba Susanna Kruger, with thirteen children including Anna Catharina (b. 16 Dec 1808, Swellendam) and Daniel Elardus (1815-1875, died Doornkloof, Pretoria) - the blog's 'Daantjie Doornkloof'; (3) the Terblans-to-Erasmus hand-over of Roode Klip mirrors the Terblans-to-Erasmus hand-over of Moeras Fontyn in 1823/1824. That the blog places Erasmus on WANHOOP rather than Moerasfontein is a difference to test, not a contradiction: the rolls put Wanhoop with Prinslo and Moeras/Modder Fontyn with Erasmus, on adjacent rows.
