The citation as it was given

RUN 23 Aug 2026 on Frans's question: "who signed off on the mooc8 for ockert oosthuizen 1809 at modderfonteyn? search mooc8 for other entries he signed off, so that we can place him." SRC-467 had already swept this series for FARM NAMES and RIVERS; nobody had swept it for the OFFICIALS. | *** WHO SIGNED. *** MOOC8/28.63 closes: "ende zulx in 't bij weezen van den CLERCQ JOHANNES DOROTHEUS CAMIJN en den EERSTE GERECHTSBODEN HENDRIK VAN AS JUNIOR als getuijgen / Als getuygen: J:D: Camijn, H: van As junior / Voorde opgaave: Jacobus Johanes Oosthuysen, Ocker Almero Oosthuysen / TEN MYNEN OVERSTAAN: A:A: FAURE". Checked verbatim against the transcription; the officials field on INV-0005 was already exactly right. | *** FINDING 1, AND IT IS THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION: THE SAME THREE MEN WERE AT THE CANGO FOUR DAYS EARLIER. *** MOOC8/28.25, 19 APRIL 1809, the estate of Helena Dorothea Schoeman, widow of Stephanus Johannes Bekker, taken "ter plaatse genaamd D' OUDE MURAGIE GEL: OP 'T EYNDE VAN DE CANGO" - and its closing formula is WORD FOR WORD the same as Modderfonteyn's, the same clerk, the same first gerechtsbode, the same "Ten mynen over staan: A:A: Faure". Four days later the identical party stood at de Modder Fonteijn aan d'Oliphants rivier. | *** WHAT FOUR DAYS COSTS. *** The end of the Cango to De Rust on the southern Olifants is about 32 km - one wagon day. The end of the Cango to Citrusdal on the Boland Olifants is about 312 km in a straight line, across the Langeberg and through two other magistracies, which is eleven wagon-days one way at the 25-30 km a day this ground allowed. A landdrost's circuit did not do that and back inside four days in April 1809. THE ITINERARY IS A HARDER ARGUMENT THAN THE LEXICAL ONE, because it does not depend on how the Orphan Chamber usually used the phrase "d'Olifants rivier" - it depends on where these three men physically were on two dated mornings. | *** FINDING 2: A.A. FAURE'S OFFICE IS STATED INSIDE THIS SERIES, THREE WEEKS AFTER OUR INVENTORY. *** MOOC8/28.22, 17 May 1809, the estate of Andries la Grange, carries a title deed "onder berusting zynde van DEN LANDDROST TE ZWELLENDAM DE HEER A:A: FAURE". MOOC8/26.65 has "den heere LANDDROST als VENDUMEESTER A:A: Faure" settling accounts on 27 December 1808, and MOOC8/25.18 a note of wagon hire "door den LANDDROST FAURE TE ZWELLENDAM". SRC-465 rested this on Geni and WikiTree and flagged it [TO VERIFY]; it now rests on three contemporary documents in the same series as the inventory itself. | *** FINDING 3: THE ATTENDING PARTY IS THE SWELLENDAM DROSTDY'S OWN ESTABLISHMENT, NOT ORPHAN CHAMBER COMMISSIONERS. *** MOOC8/25.40, 10 July 1805, was taken on the Bakkelijplaats "gel: aan Buffeljachts Rivier ONDER 'T DISTRICT VAN ZWELLENDAM" - "ten overstaan van DE HEER ANTHONY ALEXANDER FAURE", witnessed by "den OUD BOODE Hendrik van As senior en den EERSTE BOODE ALHIER Hendrik van As de jonge", and countersigned "J:H: FROUENFELDER, SECRETARIS". Frouenfelder appears elsewhere as "den vendumeester der colonie Zwellendam Jan Hendrik Frouenfelder". So van As junior is the first messenger OF THAT DROSTDY, and the clerk Camijn attends Faure throughout with Frouenfelder countersigning. That answers SRC-465's second [TO VERIFY] - that "ten mijnen overstaan" on a farm inventory might mean a commissioned member of the Orphan Chamber rather than the district officer. The men standing beside him are Swellendam's own staff. | *** THE SIGNING RANGE. *** 24 records in the transcribed volumes 21-40 carry one of the three in the ATTESTING clause (the tail formula only - searching the whole body catches the Faure FAMILY and, at MOOC8/30.13, a Hendrik van As who is the deceased). Faure attests from 1796 to 1809, Camijn from 1806 to 1813, van As junior from 1795 to 1812. All three together: MOOC8/26.28 (1806, in 't dorp alhier), 26.65 (1807, de Bruijntjes Rivier), 26.69 (1807), 32.41 (1808), 28.25 (1809, the Cango) and 28.63 (1809, de Modder Fonteyn). | WHAT THIS DOES NOT DO: it does not put the farm on the ground. The DISTRICT is now as well evidenced as this series can make it; WHERE along the southern Olifants de Modder Fonteyn stood is still open, and no Modderfontein survives in the cadastre along that river (SRC-510). LEAD-0220.
