Son of Nicolaus HitgeM (PER-000328) and Mary Wright HuntM; b. July 1819, England, per the tree; m. Sophia Johanna MockeH. DIED 29 JUL 1846 AT "OORLOGS KLOOF" per the tree - the farm on Vrolykheid's east boundary (PAR-000066), five years after the 1841 N. HitgeM title over Vrolykheid, and six weeks after Aletta's birth (11 Jun 1846). Place token is family-tree-derived but is a specific farm name, not a geocoded tail. See EVT-000166, LEAD-0009.

29 Jul 2026 [TREE]: married Sophia Johanna MockeH 25 Oct 1843 (UNI-000039); his widow remarried J.D.J. Oosthuizen of Middelwater (UNI-000040), taking baby Aletta into the Middelwater household. [CORRECTED 30 Jul 2026, death notice no. 8586] DIED AT VROLYKHEID, ZWARTBERG (PAR-000014) on 29 July 1846, not at Oorlogs Kloof as the family-tree has it - the notice is primary, signed by his brother G.J.R. Hitge and filed within five weeks. He is recorded there as a FARMER, which puts a Hitge working one of the five core farms in 1846. Birth-place given as "In England". Age at death "27 years 11 months & 29 days" computes back to about 30 July 1818, so birth_edtf moved from 1819-07 to 1818-07~ [TO VERIFY - the tree and [FS] both say 1819]. Note either way that he was born well before his parents' recorded marriage of 14 May 1820 [FS]; not resolved here. Married Sophia Johanna MockeH (PER-000136). One child at his death, unbaptised: Aletta Katharina Mary Helena (PER-000139). Estate: moveable property only.

[FS, 5 Aug 2026] HE DIED ON THIS DISTRICT'S GROUND. FamilySearch LK92-8N2 gives his death as 29 July 1846 at OORLOGS KLOOF, PRINCE ALBERT - that is PAR-000066 in this model, the farm surveyed for Lucas van VeurenM in 1833 and titled on Bf.W.Q. 5-30 on 15 April 1841. The death date already held here matches to the day, and FamilySearch gives its reason for the death fact as 'death cert', which is the better-sourced half of that record. WHY IT MATTERS BEYOND HIM: his father Nicolaus was a SHOPKEEPER in Baird Street, Uitenhage (SRC-289), which is the main argument against the Uitenhage Hitges having farmed here. His eldest son dying on Oorlogs Kloof in 1846, five years after the 1841 grants, puts the family on Prince Albert ground in that decade regardless of where the father kept shop. See LEAD-0097. TWO THINGS NOT RESOLVED. FamilySearch gives his birth as JULY 1819 in ENGLAND, where this row holds 1818-07~; and his parents' marriage is dated 14 May 1820, which is AFTER either birth year. One of the three dates is wrong, or he was born before the marriage. FamilySearch's reason for the birth is 'family-tree data' against 'death cert' for the death, so the birth is the weaker fact. Recorded, not resolved. [TO VERIFY]

[5 Aug 2026, SRC-291/292] THE 1843 MARRIAGE REGISTER (SRC-291) PUTS HIM ON VROLYKHEID, AND CALLS HIM A FARMER. Entry 811 of 25 October 1843 at Beaufort gives his rang of beroep as LANDBOUWER and his woonplaats tijdens het huwelyk as VROLYKHEID - two years after Wit Plaats, a portion of Vrolykheid, was granted to 'N. HitgeM' on 15 April 1841. The register spells him HITJES. His bride's residence is given as ZWARTEBERG. This is the primary source for a marriage the model had only from the tree.
