AND ENTRY 789 IS THEIR SON OCKERT ALMERO (PER-000001, b. 24 Apr 1786), aged 18, ALREADY ENTERED AS A HOUSEHOLDER IN HIS OWN RIGHT four years before his father's death. That a Modderfontyn stands on the same opening as Ockert Oosthuizen is a COINCIDENCE OF PAGE, not an identification, and it is exactly the coincidence that has to be tested rather than assumed. WHAT WOULD SETTLE IT: one image of the whole opening at full width, or the two leaves at the same scale with the ruled lines visible. | DE WOLVE FONTEYN and DE GROOTE HEUVEL / BUFFELS FONTEIN are the same two names SRC-483 read on page 115 of the 1808 roll ('1 wolfe fonteijn gel: aan de Swartberg', 'de buffelskloof aan de Swarteberg') and SRC-485 read at image 357 ('2 Buffel fontein, ende groote heuvel'). Three sightings of one cluster of farm names beside Oosthuizen entries, on two rolls three years apart. | MARIA ANNA KOETSER at entry 777 is the wife of a Johannes Jacobus Oosthuizen D'OUDE. The 1770 Swellendam roll (SRC-490, folio 2) has JAN OOSTHUIJSEN DE JONGE en MARIA ANNA COETSER. Jan is Johannes, de jonge in 1770 becomes d'oude by 1805, and the wife's name is the same. If it is one couple the two rolls join across thirty-five years. [TO VERIFY] | ENTRY 787, MARTH: OOSTHUIZEN MARTH:z, is the Marthz patronymic of four-brother map - the line of Martinus b.1712, which the model records as carrying ZERO children. Here the patronymic is alive in 1805. | FILM FRAMES: on this film a NAMES leaf is followed immediately by its FARMS leaf, which SRC-485 established at images 356/357 and this opening confirms at 39/40 and 41/42. Image 40's Transporteere (399) is image 42's Transport, so 40 and 42 are consecutive right leaves. The section runs past entry 790, so images 43 and 44 are needed to close it, and 37/38 to test whether it opens before 769. | *** [20 Aug 2026] THIS ROW TURNED OUT TO SETTLE THE OLIFANTS QUESTION, FIVE WEEKS OF WORK AFTER IT WAS ASKED. *** Entry 784 counts the household in the SWELLENDAM district in 1805. A burgher is counted in one district, so the six baptism registers found on 20 August - Roodezand, Paarl, Swartland, Graaff-Reinet and Swellendam twice - cannot be read as residences, and the Boland Olifants at Citrusdal, which lay in Tulbagh's district and then Clanwilliam's, is excluded by positive evidence rather than by inference. LEAD-0260 closed on it. | *** [20 Aug 2026] THE OPENING HAS BEEN ALIGNED, AND THE ROWS DO CORRESPOND ONE TO ONE. *** Frans put a ruler across images 39 and 40 and reported two anchors: OCKERTS KRAAL lines up with SUSANNA LA GRANSIE, and MELK HOUTE KRAAL lines up with ANNA REGINA SAAYMAN. Against the entry list above that is ENTRY 773 and ENTRY 771, with 'kleyne doorn Rivier' falling to Jacoba Hermina Kok at 772 between them - three consecutive rows, which is the check on the alignment rather than a fourth reading. That is what SRC-485 said nobody had established. | *** AND ENTRY 773 IS THE FAMILY. *** Susanna la Gransie is PER-000516, SUSANNA LE GRANGE (b.1769, d.1808), married to PER-000239, GERRIT JOHANNES OOSTHUIZEN (1760-1825) - a son of Jacobus Oosthuizen d'oude and therefore OCKERT JACOBUS'S OWN BROTHER. Ockerts Kraal is held in 1805 by the direct ancestor's brother. | THE CROSS-CHECK IS INDEPENDENT: at Paarl in October 1799, 'GERT OOSTHUIJSEN en SUSANNA LAGRANSIE' stood godparents to Gert Adriaan (PER-000145), Ockert Jacobus's son and the boy named for that uncle (SRC-519). The roll, the register and the parentage agree, having never been compared before today. | ONE READING NEEDS REVISITING RATHER THAN DEFENDING: entry 773's given names were transcribed above as '[?Jacol Joh:]' with the mark already on them. If the household is Gerrit Johannes the strokes should re-read as something like 'Gerr: Joh:'. THE WIFE'S NAME IS THE RELIABLE KEY HERE. | AND OCKERTS KRAAL HAS A NUMBER: SWELLENDAM 502 (SRC-510, SRC-483). A named farm, its cadastral number, its 1805 holder and that holder's exact relationship to this family, from four different sources. | ENTRY 771, 'Wm Jac:' with ANNA REGINA SAAIJMAN, holds MELK HOUTE KRAAL. No Saayman of any name is in this model. | *** [20 Aug 2026] IMAGES 41 AND 42 SUPPLIED SIDE BY SIDE, AND ON MEASUREMENT MODDERFONTEYN FALLS ON ENTRY 784 - OCKERT AND SUSANNA CATHARINA VAN TONDEREN. THIS IS NOT YET A READING AND MUST NOT BE CITED AS ONE. *** | HOW IT WAS MEASURED, so it can be checked or thrown away: the two leaves were supplied as screenshots of two separate browser windows, not as one image. Their transport lines sit level - 'per Transport' on 41 against '399.' on 42 - which is what makes a comparison possible at all. The entry pitch on image 41 is 25 rows across 529 px, about 21.2 px a row. Image 42's 'Modderfonteyn' sits 8.0 rows below entry 776. That is entry 784. THE INTERNAL CHECK IS THAT IT IS NOT A SINGLE MEASUREMENT: 'de groote Heuvel, en d' Buffels [Fontein]' falls on 783 and 'Voorbaat' on 786, and 783/784 are adjacent in both columns, as are the two farm rows. | WHY IT IS STILL MARKED. Pixel arithmetic across two windows is not a ruler across a page, and a systematic scale difference of half a row between the two screenshots would move the answer from 784 to 785 - which is 'Petr: Wilh:', a different man. FRANS'S OWN METHOD ON IMAGES 39 AND 40 IS WHAT SETTLES IT: trace the ruled line across the gutter and say which wife's row the farm sits on. That reading is authoritative and this measurement is not. | *** IF IT HOLDS, IT NAMES THE FARM HE DIED ON, FOUR YEARS EARLY - AND IT PUTS THE 1809 RIVER UNDER STRAIN, WHICH WAS PREDICTED BEFORE THE PAGE WAS OPENED. *** The neighbours on that leaf are 'aan d' Vals Rivier, en d' Berg Rivier', 'de groote Heuvel en d' Buffels [Fontein]', 'Riet Valey', 'Kaan Melk Rivier, Vlaas Rivier, Melkhoute Boom' and 'Zeekoegat & Kruis Rivier'. NONE OF THAT IS AN OLIFANTS. The 1809 inventory says 'de Modder Fonteyn GELEGEN AAN D'OLIFANTS RIVIER'. Three readings survive and this project holds nothing that separates them: the 1809 clerk was wrong about the river; there is a watercourse in that country called Olifants that we have not identified; or the household moved between 1805 and 1809. NOTE THE NAME ITSELF MATCHES EXACTLY, which is the strongest single thing here. | AND REMEMBER WHAT THE GAZETTEER ALREADY SAID: RIVERSDALE holds SIX farms called Modderfontein plus a Modderfonteine (SRC-510), and Riversdale was Swellendam district until 1838. One of them may be this. Modderfontein 417, the 1776 Kafferkuils farm, is NOT - its diagram names the Zoetemelks (SRC-466). | *** | AND THE COLUMN HEADER SETTLES WHOSE DISTRICT IT IS. SRC-521 gives the 1808 wording: 'Waar en op welken afstand van de DROSTDIJ OF HOOFDPLAATS WAAR ONDER 'T LAND ... GELEGEN' - at what distance from the drostdy UNDER WHICH THE LAND LIES. The distance is measured from the drostdy the farm SORTS UNDER, and that is Swellendam. Citrusdal sorted under TULBAGH from 1804 and under Stellenbosch before it, and Frans found no Oosthuizen in the 1804 Drakenstein roll (SRC-520). A Swellendam clerk does not tax a Tulbagh farm at any distance. | *** [20 Aug 2026] THE JURISDICTION ARGUMENT IS WEAKER THAN THIS ROW HAS BEEN CLAIMING, AND THE ROLL SAYS SO ITSELF. *** The landeryen block asks for the distance from the drostdy 'WAAR ONDER 'T LAND GELEGEN' and, on the 1816 George roll (SRC-459), for the landdrostdij the farms SORT UNDER. That column only exists because a man enrolled in one district could hold land in another. So 'he is in the Swellendam roll, therefore the farm is in Swellendam district' does not follow. READ THE LANDDROSTDIJ COLUMN ON THIS OPENING BEFORE CITING THIS ROW FOR THE DISTRICT. | Note also that 43 uuren is an outlier on its own page - the others run 14, 15, 17, 18 and 30 - which is what an out-of-district farm would look like. | *** [20 Aug 2026] THE CITATION IS NOW PROVED RATHER THAN INFERRED, WHICH IS 5a-ii DOING ITS JOB. *** Until today this row rested on one card and on where the pages appeared to sit. | AND IT SHOWS HOW THE FILM IS BUILT, which is worth knowing for every future ask on it: FILM 008145384 CARRIES SEVERAL OPGAAFROL VOLUMES, EACH FENCED BY A BEGIN AND AN END CARD. J 318 (1805) runs images 4-66. J 322 (1808) begins at image 318, with its own END card facing at 317 (SRC-486). To find a volume, look for its cards rather than counting pages. | The two cards differ in the filming block, so they are separate exposures of separate sections and not one card cited twice: J 318 is REDUCTION X 18, unit 3385, filmed 25 Jul 1978 by C Marais; SRC-486 records J 322's partial column as reduction 21 and a unit ending 885.
