The citation as it was given

Fetched 2 Nov 2026 on a question from Pieter Olckers about the origin of the farm Merweville was laid out on. TRANSCRIBED, the face: 'The diagram from A to G represents the Place called VAN DER BYL'S KRAAL, situated in the Field Cornetcy of P.E. Kruger, Gouph and District of Beaufort, contains 19480 Morgens. is bounded N and E by Government ground | S by Buffels Valley | W by Government ground | NW by Plaatdoorns and | NNW by Ongeluks Fontein. Measured by me November 1831 for PETRUS ERNST KRUGER DIEDERIK SON, (Sgd.) C.G. Ochse, Landsurveyor.' A margin note reads 'N.B. The middle of the river is the boundary.' *** THE NAME IS ON THE RIVER TOO. *** Along the watercourse inside the figure the words run 'V[an] d[er] Byl ... Kra[al] ... River', faint but legible. So in 1831 both the ground and its water carried the name while a Kruger held it. All three named neighbours survive in the cadastre: Buffels Valley is farm 268, Plaatdoorns 262, Ongeluks Fontein 261. *** THE CANCELLED STAMP CANCELS THE SHEET, NOT THE FARM. *** It reads CANCELLED and names farm 416, and the sheet was superseded under the Amended Title Act 7 of 1865. Van der Byls Kraal No. 265 stands in the provincial cadastre and in the Surveyor-General's own name index today, with portions 6, 7, 8, 13 and 15. THE VERSO carries the deduction table: three portions cut off, 9740 morgen on deed 1877-45-566, 4040 morgen 558 roods on 1882-27-519 and 2835 morgen 533 roods on 1884-48-257, and a 1990 Eskom servitude of 47 m. It names no person, so it is released under 11a as a record of ground.

Kept verbatim. This project contradicts published genealogies and corrects a family's own oral tradition, so every claim has to be checkable by someone who was not in the room.
