    Thirty-eight years old, after five months' illness, attended by Dr Stevenson of Prince Albert. Her death notice gives her home, the place she died and her place of burial all as Rondavel, Ward Kredouw, and records nine living children and two who died as infants. Her husband signed it.

    Sixty-three, of acute ascending paralysis after about three weeks, attended by Dr P.C. Luttig. Buried in the Prince Albert D.R. church cemetery - not on Rondavel beside his first wife, who had died there twenty-two years before. He had remarried and left the farm for the town.

Others of the same name

Afrikaans naming repeats hard, and the Cape Dutch naming pattern reuses a name on purpose, a child who died young has the name given again to a later sibling. These are different people. Never match on a name alone.

*** [22 Aug 2026] DOC-0333, his wife's death notice, which he signed. *** Given as aged 41 in April 1895, which agrees with a birth in 1854. He gives his own residence as RONDAVEL, KLAARSTROOM - the farm his father Stephanus Johannes TheronL was co-granted with Jan Adriaan OosthuizenL in 1868, OWN-000021. He is described as 'Husband of deceased' and is the informant.

*** [22 Aug 2026] HE IS A GRANDSON OF OCKERT ALMERO AND ADRIANA CECILIA. *** Mother: Dina Magdalena OosthuizenL (PER-000132, 1832-1908), twelfth child of Ockert Almero OosthuizenL and Adriana Cecilia VenterM. Father: Stephanus Johannes TheronL (PER-000047), co-grantee of Rondabel 1868.

HE MARRIED TWICE. Cecilia Maria du Plessis (PER-001346) died of consumption at Rondavel on 10 April 1895 leaving nine living children; he married ISABELLA LOUISE JACOBA VENTER (PER-001345, 1875-1939) and had eight more between 1896 and 1907 - the first born 14 months after Cecilia's death. He died 7 April 1917, 22 years after his first wife, almost to the day.

*** [23 Aug 2026, SRC-547] HIS OWN DEATH NOTICE. *** Died 7 APRIL 1917 at LUTTIG STREET, PRINCE ALBERT, aged 63, a RETIRED FARMER, of acute ascending paralysis after about three weeks, attended by Dr P.C. Luttig. Buried in the PRINCE ALBERT D.R. CHURCH CEMETERY. Registered 10 April 1917; the informant was C.H. VENTER, 'adult present at death', of Market Street - almost certainly kin of his second wife Isabella Louisa Jacoba Venter, though initials alone identify nobody.

*** SO HE LEFT RONDAVEL AND DIED IN TOWN, AND HE DOES NOT LIE BESIDE HIS FIRST WIFE. *** Cecilia Maria du Plessis was buried on the farm in 1895 (GRV-0021); he outlived her by twenty-two years and lies twenty-odd kilometres away. The second unread grave at the Rondabel werf is not his - LEAD-0011.

The form writes him PIET JACOBUS, the noemnaam; recorded in that field, with Petrus Jacobus kept as the display name per 5b.
