Research notes

Buried on Varsche Fontein; headstone photographed (GRV-0016, IMG-0001). [FS 27DM-B2V] Born 30 June 1838, died 14 October 1914. Parents BAREND HENDRIK BEUKES (1781-1860) and CATHARINA ELIZABETH LOTRIET (1793-1873), married at Beaufort West 19 March 1824. He married ALETTA SOPHIA JACOBA NIEMANN at Prince Albert on 22 September 1862 and they had TWELVE CHILDREN: Elizabeth Elsje Petronella 1863 (LB7K-LLT), Barend Hendrik 1865 (L19Q-M5S), Mattheus Johannes Daniel 1867 (GVR5-5KV), Maria Elizabeth 1870 (KF6M-9DD), Aletta Sophia Jacoba 1872 (GHNC-5TN), Cornelia Gertruida 1875 (GHNC-15T), Gerhardus Francois 1877 (GHNZ-8R3), Susanna Magdalena 1879 (GHNZ-QWK), Johannes Michiel 1881 (GHNZ-325), Hendrik Jacobus 1884 (GHNZ-66W), Anna Johanna 1886 (GHNC-BRQ), Francois Gerhardus 1890 (GHNZ-ZWL).

THE SPELLING: this row and the headstone read GERHARDUS FRANSOIYS BEUKES; FamilySearch reads Gerhardus Francois Beukes. The stone's spelling is kept here because it is what the family cut, and the FS form is recorded alongside.

THE 'COUSIN LINE ON FRANS'S WIFE'S SIDE' CLAIM IS WITHDRAWN AS STATED. This row said 'a cousin line on Frans's wife's side, not an Oosthuizen descent thread'. The second half is right and the first half was never traced. TESTED 7 Aug 2026 against the private tree: FRANS HAS NO BEUKES ANCESTOR AT ALL among 2,736; his wife has TWELVE, the nearest being her grandmother Johanna Christina Beukes born 1932. But NONE OF THE VARSCHE FONTEIN BEUKES IS IN THE TREE - not this man, not his parents, not his wife - so no path between them has ever been walked. THE CONNECTION IS A SURNAME. 9 says name plus date plus place, never name alone, and this project has just spent a day watching that rule fail in somebody else's tree over Jan Nys. LEAD-0123.

[7 Aug 2026] A THIRTEENTH CHILD, PROBABLY. A hand-cut stone standing alone in the veld reads 1874 / G F BEUKES / Juny [15?] - GRV-0032. He is 1838-1914, so it is not him. FamilySearch's twelve have a three-year gap at 1872-1875 and 1874 falls in it; the Gerhardus Francois on record is born 1877, after the gap; and the vernoemingspatroon gives the third son the father's own name, reused when a child dies. An infant son of 1874 fits every part and is in no compiled tree. LEAD-0126.

These are working notes, not finished prose: they carry the reasoning, the corrections and the things still marked to verify. They are kept here so the page itself can read as what is known.
