A CANDIDATE FOR THE BIRTHPLACE OF FRANS JACOBUS WILHELMUS VAN DER MERWE, 24 March 1863 - one of three Calvinia farms of this name that LEAD-0151 asks about, and the only one whose diagram has been read.
S.G. 421/1834 (SRC-477, DOC-0310): 'the figure of the LOANPLACE MATJESFONTEIN contg. 2649 Morgen & 105 Sqr. Roods with 2859 Morgen & 77 Sqr. Roods of adjt. govt. ground... situated in the SUBDISTRICT OF CLAN WILLIAM, DISTRICT WORCESTER, FIELDCORNETCY OF UNDER BOKKEVELD', surveyed for DANIEL JACOBUS LOUW SENIOR by J.W. Wentzel of Clanwilliam on 13 January 1834. Title Clw.Q.3-16 of 1 November 1838.
WHY IT IS ON THIS MAP AND NOT SIMPLY A LOUW FARM. Lokenburg, where Anna Jacoba LouwM died in 1868 and where her mother's estate was inventoried in 1823, is in THE SAME FIELD CORNETCY AND THE SAME DROSTDY (SRC-368). And that inventory's debtor list holds 'DANIEL JACOBUS LOUW D:Z:' for rd 2,000, among bonds to Anna Jacoba's own brothers and to her husband Schalk Willem van der MerweL. The D:z: is Danielszoon, so he is NOT her brother - a Louw of another line, a neighbour, and a debtor of this household.
NOT ESTABLISHED AS THE BIRTHPLACE. What would settle it is the transfer history between 1838 and 1863, or a Calvinia baptism entry naming the farm. Calvinia 601 and 679 carry the same name and are unread.
Calvinia is in as ancestry and not as a community, and this is not core.
