From a loan farm on the Zwartberg to eight cadastral parcels: the full documented history of Middelwater No. 169 - Stretch's 1833 survey for Okert Oosthuizen, the twelve-farm grant day of 1841, the 1883 resurvey and the 1884 quitrent to J.D.J. Oosthuysen 'and another', the portions cut off for a spring called Vaste Water and a place called Avondrust, and the 1990 power-line survey whose coordinates finally put the farm on a map.

Research notes

[9 Aug 2026] PORTION 2 IS 936.9 ha AND ITS REMAINDER IS 382.5. They are two cadastral records, W052C061000000000169000020 and ...000021, and this row had been pinned to the SECOND of them, so Portion 2 and the Remainder of Portion 2 were drawn as one piece of ground at one area. Re-pinned to ...000020.

AND THE DIFFERENCE IS PORTION 7. 936.9 less 382.5 is 554.4 ha, which is W052C061000000000169000070, Middelwater Portion 7 (PAR-000081), to the tenth of a hectare. So the ground cut out of Portion 2 to leave its Remainder is Portion 7. The 30 Jul note asked where it went and put the figure at 478.6 ha; that figure came from an earlier pairing of records and is wrong.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR ADDING THE FARM UP: count the Remainder of Portion 2 and Portion 7, or count Portion 2 alone, never both. Remainder-of-farm 378.4 + Ptn 1 2,351.7 + Ptn 2 RE 382.5 + Ptn 3 3,544.8 + Ptn 4 846.1 + Ptn 5 9.1 + Ptn 6 876.9 + Ptn 7 554.4 = 8,943.9 ha against the farm's 8,944.0.

No document this project holds names a Portion 2 of farm 169: it is absent from the 1883 verso deduction table (DOC-0039) and from the 1989 servitude map's list of the farm's parts (DOC-0040). It is in the Surveyor-General's cadastre only. [TO VERIFY]

[13 Aug 2026] Renamed to the one form this model uses for every portion - the portion's own name, then the parent farm, its number and the portion in brackets - so that a name is legible in a list, a search result and a map popup without the reader having to know which farm number is which. It read "Middelwater Portion 2" before. Nothing about the ground changed.
