Diagram verso, 1364/1883 (verso), 1883

Diagram verso, 1883

The scan is held as 11572716.PDF and is deliberately not published on this page: dated 1990. A PDF's text is not read by any of the build's leak tests, so only documents dated before 1936 are copied into the site. Everything transcribed from it is on this page.

3007. The survey record on the first row is easily misread as 1459; at high magnification it is 1437/1883, and the sub-division is not Klein Vlei, which is a neighbouring farm (PAR-000041).

THE TABLE BALANCES THE GRANT TO THE ROOD. The face (DOC-0001) grants 10,731 morgen 100 roods. Deduct 9,264 mg 180 rds, 980 mg and 9 mg 520 rds and exactly 477 MORGEN 0 ROODS remain, at 600 square roods to the morgen. Three figures written down across 43 years by three different hands close on a round number, which is a check on all four of them.

IT DATES THE FAMILY LEAVING THE FARM. The quitrent title issued to J.D.J. Oosthuysen and another on 24 MARCH 1884. The first row of this table transfers 9,264 morgen 180 roods away on 26 JUNE 1884, three months later and 86% of the farm. Sale or partition between the two co-grantees the sheet does not say: LEAD-0136. What is left, 477 morgen, is the south-western quarter carrying the werf, the vineyard, Vaste Water and Avondrust. J.D.J. Oosthuizen (PER-000004) died in Cape Town in 1903 a "retired gentleman".

AGAINST THE MODERN CADASTRE. Portions 1, 2, 3, 4 and 7 together are 7,679.5 ha = 8,967 morgen against the 9,264 morgen of the 1884 169/1, 3.2% apart, so they look like later subdivisions of that one block. Avondrust maps at 876.9 ha = 1,024 morgen against 980 stated; Vaste Water at 9.1 ha = 10.6 morgen against 9.87. The modern polygons run a few percent either side of the 1883 figures throughout, which is ordinary resurvey drift. [TO VERIFY] the exact correspondence from the subdivision diagrams.

THE SCAN IS WITHHELD, THE TRANSCRIPTION IS NOT. The newest ink on this sheet is a SERVITUDES table written in 1990 (survey record E131/90, diagram 6955/90, deed K.354/96s), so title_edtf is 1990 and the image falls outside the 1936 limit. It is also a PDF, which leak_tests bounds on date alone with no per-document escape, because a PDF's text is opaque to every check in the suite. The table above is the substance and it publishes. Compare DOC-0219, the same case on a JPEG, which is released.

[31 Jul 2026] survey_edtf set to 1883 from the diagram's own number, 1364/1883, which is the recto DOC-0001 this sheet is the back of. The field was simply never filled; nothing about the document changed. The endorsements written ON the verso run later - 1923 (Vaste Water) and 1926 (Avondrust) - and are dated in the note above rather than being folded into the survey date.

[5 Aug 2026] doc_type corrected from SG_diagram to SG_diagram_verso. This row's sg_diagram_no already carried the '(verso)' suffix, so the scan gate read it correctly, but render.DOC_TYPE_LABEL maps the two types to different public labels - the site called this back of a sheet a 'Surveyor-General diagram' - and every per-type count double-counted a front. The 31 Jul verso batch predates the convention 8 records.

The research behind this page, kept separate from it: dated working notes, open questions, and what is not yet settled.
