FETCHED 30 Sep 2026 to test LEAD-0390 - whether Schalkenbosch, 2,2 km from the Zachte Vally, carries the name of Schalk Willemsz van der Merwe. *** IT GIVES NO SUPPORT FOR THAT, AND THE ANSWER IS RECORDED AS A NEGATIVE SO IT IS NOT LOOKED FOR TWICE. *** TRANSCRIBED: 'THE FARM Schalken-bosch, 229, TULBAGH. Now known as the farm SCHALKENBOSCH. Nevenstaande kaart A.B.C.D.E.F. komt uittemaken het Figuur van een in Erfpagt verzogte NIEUW STUK LAND, groot in zynen grond 329 Morgen en 157 Quadraat Roeden gelegen in het District van TULBAGH onder het Veldcornetschap van David Johs. Theron. Strekkende Noord & Noordwestwds. aan het land door David Johs. Theron in Erfpagt verzogt | Oostwds. aan de Berg en | Zuidwds. aan het Land door Thobias Wiessen in Erfpagt verzogt. Gemeten op last der commissie van Inspectie voor DAVID DE VAAL door my (Get.) P. MEIRING, Gezw. Landmeter.' The face also marks 'Zaayland 21 Morgen', 'Zaailand 4 Morgen', 'Tuinland 2 Morgen', 'Woonhuis', 'Sterke fontein', 'Schraal wyland 302 Morgen & 157 quadraat Roeden', and the eastern boundary 'Hooge en Steile Berg'. *** WHAT IT SHOWS AND WHAT IT DOES NOT. *** It is a NEW piece of erfpacht land in 1831, measured for David de Vaal, in David Johannes Theron's veldcornetschap, between Theron ground to the north-west and Thobias Wiessen's to the south. No van der Merwe appears on it. A de Vaal widow is already the southern neighbour of the Zachte Vally in 1816 (SRC-714), so this is de Vaal ground in both decades. IT CANNOT SETTLE THE NAME'S ORIGIN: 1831 is ninety-one years after the 1740 inventory, and a name older than its first survey is ordinary. The honest statement is that the oldest document the index holds for Schalkenbosch does not connect it to this family.
