*** THE STRUCTURAL KEY TO THE WHOLE FILM. *** Headed simply 'Index', and at the foot in a second hand 'Opgaaf Roll'. It lists every veldcornetcy of the Clanwilliam district with the folios each occupies, so a reader can go straight to a ward instead of turning 623 images. The first surname is not confidently read and no plausible word is offered for it (5a rule 5). *** WELBEDAGT'S WARD IS FOLIOS 18 AND 19. *** The 1823 erfpacht survey (DOC-0291) places the farm 'in de agter hantam', so Carel Aaron's household belongs on two leaves of this volume and nowhere else in it. *** AND THE VELDCORNET DATES THE VOLUME, WHICH ITS OWN LEAF DOES NOT. *** DOC-0291 gives the Agterhantam veldcornetcy to HENDRIK VOLGRAEFF (PER-002101) on 2 June 1823. This index gives it to JACOBUS JOHANNES LOUW. The two cannot be the same year, so this volume is from a year when Louw held the ward, and the succession between the two men would date it without a title leaf. *** IT ALSO REACHES THE OTHER LINE. *** OLIFANTS RIVIER is a Clanwilliam ward, ff. 7-8, under Arie Zacharias VISAGIE. The Olifants is the Oosthuizen prequel ground of 9a, and this film holds two of its leaves. A CANDIDATE, NOT AN IDENTIFICATION: the Bidouw and Cederbergen veldcornet is named FRANS JACOBUS LUBBE, which is the name of PER-001637 (1786-1859), father-in-law of PER-001631. The dates are compatible and nothing else joins them. 9 forbids matching on a name alone. [TO VERIFY]
