A search on Klue returns three men: this one, Daniel Hendrik Klue (signaller, 1984) and Jan Johannes Klue (Field Force Battalion, 1942). Only four men stand on the Scheepers commando roll in this database. *** WHAT IT CORROBORATES. *** The commando. eGGSA's album narrative (SRC-330) already placed the Remhoogte man in Gideon Scheepers's commando and this is an independent source saying the same thing. And the burial ground: Remhoogte, Prince Albert. *** WHAT IT CONTRADICTS, AND IT MUST NOT BE RESOLVED QUIETLY. *** This project holds the killing as 2 FEBRUARY 1901, in the running fight through Die Gang between Klaarstroom and Prince Albert. ROHSA says 24 AUGUST 1901 at DOORNRIVIER IN THE LANGKLOOF. That is seven months and some two hundred kilometres apart, over the Swartberg. Both cannot describe one killing. Three readings and none is chosen here: (1) two men and one burial ground, though eGGSA photographed only one Kleu stone at Remhoogte; (2) the February date is wrong, and it is worth knowing it comes from the ALBUM NARRATIVE rather than from the stone, while Rose Willis (SRC-010, tertiary) says only 'February'; (3) ROHSA has joined a Langkloof death to a Prince Albert burial. 'from Grootfontein' is unexplained: it reads as the home farm, or as where the body was brought from. *** AND ONE FIELD IS THE BEST NAME EVIDENCE THIS PROJECT HAS FOR HIM. *** The initials read '( J', which is what a compiler produces from '(Piet) Johannes' - so the roll behind it very likely wrote P. J. KLUE, or the name as Piet Johannes. Under 5b Piet is Petrus. See LEAD-0332. LAYER C. [TO VERIFY] *** THE PAGE HAS TWO MORE FIELDS THAT WERE NOT IN THE FIRST CROP, AND ONE OF THEM SETTLES THE MAN. *** NOTES: 'Address: Waterkloof, Aberdeen. WMBR id 1644' CITATIONS: unknown. Rose Willis (SRC-010) has the Remhoogte man 'walking home to Aberdeen', and eGGSA's album narrative (SRC-330) gives his home as Aberdeen. Neither of those is this database and this database gives him a FARM there, Waterkloof. Surname, commando, burial ground and home town all agree across three sources that do not depend on one another. The man in ROHSA 45992 and the man in the Remhoogte grave are the same man, and PER-000518 now has a name to be called by: KLUE, (PIET) JOHANNES, OF WATERKLOOF, ABERDEEN. *** WHICH MAKES THE DATE THE PROBLEM RATHER THAN THE IDENTITY. *** With one man established, 2 February and 24 August 1901 are no longer two candidates for two men; they are two dates for one killing and one of them is wrong. The August date has the better company: SCHEEPERS WAS TAKEN NEAR PRINCE ALBERT ON 10 OCTOBER 1901, so his commando was in this country in the late winter and spring of 1901, which is when a Klaarstroom occupation and a fight through Die Gang would sit. [TO VERIFY] - that is a reading of the campaign, not a document, and it is not enough on its own to move a date this project has published. What would move it: the Prince Albert Mounted Troops' own return for the action, or a burial register.
