THE OOSTHUIZENS ARE NOT IN BOVEN OLIFANTS RIVIER', and called the distinction 'the difference between a finding and a confident wrong answer'. LEAD-0296 was opened on 23 Aug 2026 doubting exactly that, because image 181 seemed to head the page with the ward name. IT DOES NOT HEAD IT; IT CLOSES THE PREVIOUS ONE. The 1816 reading was right, the 1813 roll works the same way, and the ward whose name SRC-459 could not see in the left margin is now a candidate: DE CANGO. | *** IT ALSO SETTLES THE ATTAQUASKLOOF QUESTION. *** Attaquas Kloof is a SEPARATE AND LATER WARD on the same roll, closing at image 192 - eleven pages after the Oosthuizen block. It is real, it is a George field cornetcy, and OOSTHUYSENS DID HOLD GROUND IN IT IN 1792 (SRC-467) - but it is not the ward this household was enrolled in in 1813. | *** [THE SAME EVENING] THE RULE IS CONFIRMED FROM THE OTHER END OF THE ROLL. *** IMAGE 124 IS THE FIRST HOUSEHOLD PAGE and it has NO TRANSPORT LINE AT ALL - it opens straight into 'Jan Ab: Meyer d oud x Marg: Aletta Muller | Jan [?Linters] | Jan Ab: Meyer | Gerrit [?Hen] Meyer'. Nothing is carried forward because nothing precedes it. | THE PAGE AFTER IT carries 'P:r Transport 21 16 12 13 3' with the MANS NAAMEN COLUMN BLANK - a carried-forward total with NO ward name. *** SO A WARD NAME ON A TRANSPORT LINE IS NOT ROUTINE FURNITURE: IT APPEARS ONLY WHEN A WARD HAS JUST CLOSED. *** | AND IMAGE 132's TRANSPORT LINE READS 'MOSSEL BAAIJ' against 72 - so the roll's FIRST ward is MOSSEL BAY, running from image 124 to its close at 132, and the district's wards are enrolled in order from the coast inland. That is the same pattern as image 181's 'Boven Oliphans Rivier', 185's 'd Cango' and 192's 'Attaquas Kloof', read at the far end of the same volume. | THE WARD ORDER SO FAR, as the transport lines give it: MOSSEL BAAIJ closes 132 ... BOVEN OLIPHANS RIVIER closes 181 ... D CANGO closes 185 ... [a ward whose name is not visible in the crop] closes 187 ... ATTAQUAS KLOOF closes 192. | I HAVE NOT DONE ARITHMETIC ON THE CARRIED FIGURES. Image 181's head reads 521 389 448 473 20 and its foot 521 462 476 460, which cannot both be right as I have read them, so the numbers are not reliable enough at these crops to size a ward by subtraction. The STRUCTURE is solid; the counts are not, and 5a says so.
