MOOC8/32.22, 20 January 1816 (SRC-467) - if this is the man, and the age fits at about sixty-two. That estate names 'de BERGFONTYN gelegen aan deeze zeide van de Gourits Rivier' and a place 'aan de VALSCH RIVIER gelegen aan de Twee Kuylen IN HET DISTRICT ZWELLENDAM'.

Son of GERHARDUS OOSTHUIJZEN (PER-000298), so a first cousin of Ockert. The export gives his birth as 'before 21 July 1754' and no death and no spouse, so the identification rests on name, generation and district. [TO VERIFY]

[2026-09-23, SRC-688] MOOC8/32.22 READ IN FULL: given in by four sons, Gerret, Jacobus, Nicolaas Jacobus and Petrus Johannes, for the minor daughter Johanna Susanna, 19; room by room at de Bergfontyn on the Gourits; 2072 muids of barley, a wagon-maker's yard, 40 oxen, 129 cattle, 333 sheep, twelve enslaved people named with ages. Image 356 of film 008145384 carries entries 724-734, four of them OOSTHUIZEN. Image 357 carries the farms column, and one of its rows reads 'MODDERFONTEIJN gel: aan Kafferkuils rivier'. If the two are facing leaves of one opening, which household holds which farm?

What the record is missing

DOC-0385 (MOOC8/32.22, 1816-01-20) lists a household's whole movable estate, which means officials went to where that household lived. It says “the loan places de Bergfontyn 'aan deeze zeide van de Gourits Rivier' and Aan de Valsch Rivier 'aan de Twee Kuylen', Swellendam district” and no more. No parcel is attached, so the family it describes sits nowhere on the map.

What would settle it The inventory's own heading usually names the farm and the field-cornetcy; where it does not, the deceased's quitrent or opgaaf entry for that year will. This is the shape that produced the de Bruin/Rondabel find.
