Research notes
[GRAVE GRV-0029] From his headstone in the Varsche Fontein cemetery, hand-cut and phonetic: 'JACOBES : JOHANES BEUKES, GEB 26 MAAIE 1912, [O]VER[L] 10 MAART 191[3].' MAAIE is Mei written as it was said, and JACOBES and JOHANES are Jacobus and Johannes the same way - the same hand and the same habit as the Freysen and the 1874 stones. ABOUT NINE AND A HALF MONTHS OLD. The death year's last digit is the least certain character on the stone and is read as 3 [TO VERIFY]. A GRANDCHILD OR GREAT-GRANDCHILD OF PER-000029, not one of his twelve children: those were born 1863 to 1890, so a child of 1912 is the next generation down. WHOSE child is not established - the candidates are the sons of that family still living in 1912 (Barend Hendrik 1865, Mattheus Johannes Daniel 1867, Johannes Michiel 1881, Hendrik Jacobus 1884, Francois Gerhardus 1890) and their own children. LEAD-0122.
These are working notes, not finished prose: they carry the reasoning, the corrections and the things still marked to verify. They are kept here so the page itself can read as what is known.
