[11 Aug 2026, SRC-395] CALLED KOOS in the family, from the 1987 typescript's list of the seven surviving Walters children (Jacobus).
[11 Aug 2026, SRC-395] THE SMUTS IN HIS NAME IS GENERAL JAN SMUTS, WHO WAS HIS GODFATHER. Before he was born his parents promised him to "Jannie Smuts", feeling they could not afford another child; when he came they would not give him up. "Genl. Smuts was sy peetpa en hom altyd gesien wanneer hy (Smuts) in die Kaap was." He was called KOOS. THIS CORRECTS A READING MADE HERE THE SAME DAY. From the name alone this project inferred a Smuts in the ancestry rather than a politician, on the grounds that this family carries surnames as given names. There IS a Smuts in the ancestry - his mother's mother - but that is not where his name comes from.
