Research notes

DIRECT ANCESTOR - Frans's 8x-great-grandfather, via his mother. [SRC-072] Born 26 Jan 1678 at Nieuwmunster, Zuienkerke, near Brugge in West Flanders; came to the Cape in 1699 as a VOC soldier; free burgher 1700. Farmed the place he named Nieuwmunster (PAR-000063) in the Land van Waveren 1709-1747, retiring to Poespasvallei, Robertson, where he died about 1757. Progenitor of the Swanepoel family in South Africa. In the private family tree as Petrus Jansz Swanepoel, 26 Jan 1678 - 1758.

[4 Aug 2026, SRC-259] HE IS IN THE TULBAGH BOOK, ON A NAMED FARM, AND THE DETAIL IS GOOD. Boeseken and Cairns give him a loan place from 1709 "below Witsenberg in the land of Waveren", extended in the 1717 renewal to "over the Breede River", and the freehold grant of NIEUWMUNSTER - 61 morgen - in 1716. In his own petition he says he had already occupied and cultivated it for six years, so from about 1710. HIS OWN CENSUS RETURN of 27 April 1716 was "laboriously written out by this farmer who was not as familiar with the pen as he was with farm implements": 60 muids of corn reaped from a sowing of 6, with ONE slave, some cattle, cows and horses - and the sheep, he records, "been stolen by the Hottentots". AND HE WAS WOUNDED. In the 1715 raid he was hit in the leg by an assegai, alongside Johannes Vosloo and Lammert Lammertsz, who died four days later of a wound to the abdomen. WHAT IT MEANS FOR THIS PROJECT: a Swanepoel ancestor was farming in the Land van Waveren from about 1710, which is direct documentary support for the Tulbagh stage of the migration traced in LEAD-0077 - no longer an inference from geocoded birthplaces.

On Nieuwmunster (Land van Waveren), Pieter Jansz SwanepoelH is the last owner recorded from 1709, and the next entry is Johannes Hendrik ConradieL from 1747-10-26, 38 years later, with no person in common. DOC-0056 records the later arrival but not the 38 years before it.

What would settle it The Deeds Office transfer register for this farm between 1709 and 1747. A transfer names its predecessor in title, so one deed closes the whole gap.

A boundary description for Botterkraal (Jansenskraal No. 104 Ptn 2) names Estate late P.J. Swanepoel, a surveyor stating on the record that this person held the adjoining ground. We do hold Swanepoel tenure elsewhere, but none on this boundary and none at this date.

What would settle it The diagram's own date fixes the window. The quitrent or erfpacht register for that year names the holder of the adjoining place, and an estate inventory will name the farm outright.
