Research notes

The loan farm Vrolykheid was surveyed for him in Aug 1833 (DOC-0027: "Surveyed for Jacobus Johannes OosthuizenL As. son").

READING LOCKED IN by [FAMILY] As. son. is read as "ALMERO'S SON", not "Andries son" - the 1963 typist's rendering of a patronymic disambiguator using the family's one rare name. Under that reading the tree leaves exactly ONE adult candidate alive in 1833: JACOBUS JOHANNES OOSTHUIZEN (c.1785 - 29 Oct 1867), PER-000208, son of Ockert Almero OosthuizenL (1755) - the root ancestor's elder brother, aged 48 at the survey. (The root couple's own similarly-named son, Jacobus DANIEL Johannes PER-000004, was ten years old in 1833 and is excluded.) THREE INDEPENDENT LINES CONVERGE: (1) the uniqueness of the name-plus-patronymic in the tree; (2) Fred van Zyl's unprompted family tradition [SRC-119] that PER-000208's son Ockert Jacobus (PER-000211, b.1809) was "gebore en afkomstig van die plaas Vrolikheid"; (3) the 1848 Marico farm named KLAARSTROOM (EVT-000008) by that same son - Klaarstroom borders Vrolykheid. IDENTIFICATION HELD AS PROBABLE, NOT MERGED [TO VERIFY]: the original 1833 manuscript diagram at the SG office, or the 1841 title B.W.Q.5.18's recital of the prior loan-place holder, would settle it. Earlier "(Andries son)" reading and the 29 Jul retraction note superseded by this entry. Vrolykheid was surveyed for him but the 1841 title issued to N. HitgeM (see OWN-000022/OWN-000023, LEAD-0009) - consistent with the family's move toward Colesberg (PER-000208 remarried there 1847) and the son's 1848 Marico trek.

29 Jul 2026, MARINCOWITZ-WEB CORROBORATION [TREE]: his daughter Hester Cornelia Catharina (PER-000374, by Anna Helena RoscherM) married Thomas Frederick MarincowitzL, son of Gerolm and Hester Hitge (UNI-000041). The 1833 applicant's household is thus tied by marriage to BOTH later holders of Vrolykheid - the Hitge title line and the Marincowitz owners - and no other Jacobus Johannes appears anywhere in that web. Third independent line supporting the locked identification.

[6 Aug 2026, SRC-294] FRED VAN ZYL'S SECOND LETTER, AND IT IS NOT A FOURTH INDEPENDENT LINE - his first letter is already line (2) above, so this is the same source speaking again and must not be counted twice. What it adds is sharper wording and a numbering. He gives the two brothers in the de Villiers notation - b7c3d2 Jacobus Johannes (1785-1867) and b7c3d3 Ockert Almero - both as sons of Ockert Almero OosthuizenL (1754/55-1809), which is exactly the 'As. son' reading, arrived at from a family tree rather than from the diagram. And in a same-day correction he states the conclusion outright: this man IS the 'Jacobus Johannes OosthuizenL' named on the Vrolikheid diagram. He also dates his son Ockert Jacobus's birth on Vrolikheid to 1809, which would put the household on that ground twenty-four years before Stretch measured it. STILL NOT MERGED WITH PER-000208. The note above says what would settle it - the original 1833 manuscript at the SG office, or the 1841 title's recital of the prior loan-place holder - and a correspondent agreeing with a reading is not either of those. See LEAD-0110.
