Research notes

[8 Aug 2026] READ. "NO. A. 942/1858. The sides, angles and area of this diagram are mutually consistent. (Sgd.) L. MarquardM. Examiner." Caption verbatim: "The above diagram A. B. C. D. E. F. represents 9 Morgen and 167 square roods of ground, being a portion of the farm KLAARSTROOM, situate in the fieldcornetcy of 'Zwaart Berg', division of Prince Albert." Bounded North, West and South by the remaining portion of the farm "Klaarstroom" and EAST BY THE GROOT RIVER. "Surveyed and drawn from actual admeasurement on the spot by me (Sgd.) Frederick Wm. Barry, Swn. Surveyor. February 1858." Scale in RHYNLAND ROODS, not Cape roods. Magnetic variation 29 deg 30' W. Copy stamp: "Copied from diagram relating to Transfer Deed No. 45 dated 3.6.1858 (Vol. 23)", re-stamped for the Surveyor-General 19.3.1965.

PAR-000151 carries the rest. Two things are worth adding here. First, the examiner is L. MARQUARD - the same Marquard who resurveyed Kopjes Kraal in November 1863 (STO-0034) and made it 1,343 morgen smaller than Thwaits and Melvill had. He is a recurring hand in this district and not only a signature on one sheet. Second, a manuscript endorsement across the top right: "Included in Consol Vide SG 1230/2014 Farm 178/39". That is 2014 ink on an 1858 sheet, and the sheet publishes on its 1858 date. This project already has a rule for it and a check enforcing it: 11, the gate is about PEOPLE, and a consolidation endorsement is a record of GROUND naming nobody. It stays published. The case that needs the date corrected is the one where the later ink is the SHEET's whole content, which is what DOC-0039 and DOC-0219 turned out to be.

The research behind this page, kept separate from it: dated working notes, open questions, and what is not yet settled.
