Everything this project has said about the older of the two Johannes Diederiks now rests on a register entry rather than on an index: born 23 December 1869, baptised 28 January 1870, admitted to membership at Oudtshoorn in April 1889 aged twenty (SRC-608), married at De Rust in December 1929 aged sixty (SRC-609), dead at Oudtshoorn in February 1940 aged seventy (SRC-610), and a headstone reading 1869-1940. SO THE TWO-MAN READING GETS STRONGER RATHER THAN WEAKER. The Vredefort bridegroom of 1907 gave his age as twenty-eight and was entered as a bachelor (SRC-612); this man was thirty-seven that April and is on paper from birth. *** AND THE CHILD IS NAMED FOR THE WITNESS, WHO IS HIS MOTHER'S PEOPLE. *** JOHANNES DEDERICK FERREIRA stands at the font and the boy is JOHANNES DIEDERICH. That is the vernoemingspatroon doing what 5b says it does, and it also explains where an otherwise unusual second name in this family comes from. ONE NAME ON THE SAME OPENING WORTH KEEPING. The entry of 23 January 1870, four above this one, carries SEBASTIAAN JOHANNES KLEU as a witness. Joseph and Jacoba's own son of that name was born in 1865 and was five, so this is an older man of the same name, a generation up or sideways from Joseph. The Kleus of this district are not a small family and their given names repeat. THE CONGREGATION IS NOT STATED IN THE CROP. A left-margin note against another entry reads 'van George', which places the register in that ring rather than naming it. [TO VERIFY] under 5a-ii.
