THE RIVER DOES RESOLVE. | *** WHY IT IS DECISIVE: GEORGE WAS CREATED ON 23 APRIL 1811 OUT OF THE EASTERN PART OF SWELLENDAM, AND THIS IS THE FIRST GEORGE ROLL. *** A household enrolled in George in 1811 was living on ground that had been Swellendam's the year before. It did not move; THE BOUNDARY MOVED. And the George district's Olifants is the LITTLE KAROO one - the river that runs past De Rust and Dysselsdorp. Citrusdal was in the TULBAGH district in 1805, in 1809 and in 1811, and never became George at any point. | SO THE CHAIN IS CLOSED AND EVERY LINK IS A DOCUMENT: 1805, Ockert counted at Swellendam holding MODDERFONTEYN 'aan d' Olyphants Rivier' (SRC-497); April 1809, his estate taken ON that farm by A.A. WHAT SURVIVES OF IT is the family's memory and the three Boland baptisms of 1796-1802, which belong to where the family CAME FROM and are LEAD-0260's question, not this one. | ONE THING THIS DOES NOT SAY: the 1811 farm is NOT named Modderfontein. The marked '[?Winkhoop]' above is superseded; the water is still marked. | *** AND THE CADASTRE HAS NO WANHOOP IN THE WESTERN CAPE AT ALL. *** Queried against the Chief Surveyor-General's national gazetteer (SRC-510) on 20 Aug 2026, all nine provinces: ELEVEN Wanhoops nationwide and every one of them in an old Transvaal or Natal registration division - JS 443, JT 78, JU 485, HV 14926, GS 1278. NONE in the Western Cape, and no BRAKWATER in the Western Cape either. | *** THAT IS NOT A DEAD END, IT IS A PATTERN. *** MODDERFONTEYN is likewise absent from the cadastre along that river, and the roll enters each as '1 PLAATS'. A PLAATS in 1811 is a LOAN PLACE, held on annual recognition and not titled. Loan places routinely never became quitrent farms under their own names, which is exactly why 5 says the cadastre records TITLE and not what people called the ground they lived on. | SO THIS FAMILY HELD LOAN GROUND AND NOT PROPERTY RIGHT UP TO THE KOUP - 1's sentence about the district read back onto one household: 'taken up as loan farms from about 1777 and fixed as property by the grants of 15 April 1841'. Wanhoop and Modder Fonteyn leave no cadastral trace for the same reason those grants matter. | THE ROUTE TO THE GROUND IS THEREFORE NOT THE CADASTRE. That is 32 km from Clanwilliam, 77 km down the valley from CITRUSDAL - and 417 km from George. There is no Vaalwater or Vaal Water in George, Oudtshoorn, Uniondale, Prince Albert, Calitzdorp or Ladismith. | *** SO THE CITRUSDAL READING IS BACK, AND THIS ROW'S 'THE CITRUSDAL READING IS CLOSED' IS WITHDRAWN. *** It was written on the reasoning that a household enrolled in George in 1811 must have held land in George. THE LANDERIJEN COLUMN EXISTS PRECISELY TO RECORD LAND UNDER ANOTHER LANDDROSTDIJ (SRC-459, SRC-521), so that step never followed, and SRC-497 already said as much. | *** BUT THE ARGUMENT MUST NOT BE RUN BOTH WAYS, AND THAT IS THE DISCIPLINE THIS TURNS ON. *** This row argues that WANHOOP's ABSENCE from the cadastre proves nothing, because loan places were never titled. The same reasoning applies to a water: 'het vaale water' is a DESCRIPTIVE PHRASE - pale or turbid water - and an unregistered vaale water could sit on any river in the colony. A cadastral hit is a candidate, not an identification. What makes this one worth taking seriously is that it is on an OLIFANTS, which is what the entry says. | *** AND A CITATION GAP OF MY OWN, WHICH IS THE SAME ONE 5a-ii IS ABOUT. *** I have the target card for J 89 (GEORGE, 1811) and the one for J 90 (GEORGE, 1813), but I HAVE NOT SEEN WHICH IMAGES THEY BOUND. Film 008145384 turned out to carry several volumes each fenced by a begin and an end card; film 008145124 has 545 images and presumably does the same. THAT IMAGE 93 SITS INSIDE THE 1811 GEORGE SECTION IS AN INFERENCE FROM THE ORDER THE PAGES ARRIVED IN, NOT A FACT I HAVE CHECKED. | TWO CHECKS DECIDE IT, both on film already held: (1) the BEGIN and END cards for J 89 on film 008145124, which say whether image 93 is the 1811 George roll at all; (2) the LANDDROSTDIJ COLUMN on the leaf facing image 93 - if it names TULBAGH or CLANWILLIAM, the land was in the Boland and Frans has been right since he first said so. | *** [23 Aug 2026] THE FARM NAME READ [?Winkhoop] HERE IS ALMOST CERTAINLY WANHOOP. SRC-563. *** Image 182 of the 1813 roll - the same family, the same ward, two years on - carries 'WANHOOP EN MISGUNT' in the places column, and SRC-525 lists WANHOOP and MISGUND as consecutive farms of the Veldkornetskap Oliphants Rivier. This row's reading stays as transcribed, because it records what THIS sheet shows; the name is Wanhoop. | *** [23 Aug 2026] A SENTENCE IN THIS ROW OVERSTATES WHAT SRC-497 SUPPORTS. *** The chain above says '1805, Ockert counted at Swellendam holding MODDERFONTEYN aan d' Olyphants Rivier (SRC-497)'. SRC-497 ITSELF SAYS THE OPPOSITE ABOUT THE HOLDING: 'That a Modderfontyn stands on the same opening as Ockert Oosthuizen is a COINCIDENCE OF PAGE, not an identification, and it is exactly the coincidence that has to be tested rather than assumed.' WHAT SRC-497 DOES ESTABLISH is that the household was counted in the SWELLENDAM DISTRICT in 1805 - which is the load-bearing half of the argument here and is untouched. The farm-name half is not established. | THIS IS THE SAME FAILURE MODE AS THE WANHOOP ROW ON IMAGE 182 (SRC-563), five weeks apart and on the same question: two leaves of one opening, supplied at different zooms, and a farm name that cannot be tied to a line.
