THE NAME ALONE IDENTIFIES NOBODY, which is exactly why the 1809 clerk wrote the river - and why the river has to be read literally. | AND EVERY ONE OF THEM IS "EEN OPSTAL STAANDE OP DE LEENINGSPLAATS" - the buildings on a loan place, valued as a movable. Ours is the only one phrased differently, because by 1809 the place had already been sold to the eldest son and appears in the debts as "over koop van de plaats de Modder Fonteyn ... 1000". Rd 1000 is the same order as the Bruijntjes Hoogte opstal at 55.37a. That is the price of an OPSTAL, not of freehold - which is why the farm has no number to find. | *** FINDING 3: IN MOOC8, "D'OLIFANTS RIVIER" USUALLY MEANS THE SOUTHERN ONE. *** 70 distinct mentions. Scored on the place-names within 700 characters, FIFTEEN lean south and ONE leans west. The southern ones are explicit and unmistakable: "aan de Oliphantsrivier AGTER DE CANGO" (14.65a, 1773); "gelegen inde ATTAQUASCLOOF aan de Oliphants Rivier" (50.101a, 1792); "aan 't Warmebad boven de Oliphants Rivier AGTER DE CANGO" (49.19, 1782); "aan de KAUKOE aan de Oliphants Rivier" (27.22, 1795); "aan den Olyphants Rivier, DISTRICKT GEORGE" (45.77, 1829); "in 't district GEORGE, Oliphantsrivier" (46.35, 1823). The single western one names the Piquet Berg (20.7, 1790). The place is the loan place WELBEDAGT, GELEGEN INDE ATTAQUASCLOOF AAN DE OLIPHANTS RIVIER, opstal Rd 133:16. The estate owes the Company TEN YEARS AND SIX MONTHS of arrear recognitie penningen on it, so the family had held it since about 1782. The farm inventory was signed on the spot: "AAN DE OLIPHANTS RIVIER op voorn: plaatz den 18 Maij 1792". | ITS APPRAISERS ARE ITS OWN KIN: J.W. Barkhuysen, JOHANNES JACOBUS OOSTHUYSEN, OCKERT OLIVIER D'OUDE, and in the May sheet JAN OOSTHUYSEN JAN ZOON. Three Oosthuysen men on one southern-Olifants farm in 1792. | AND THE KIT IS THE SAME KIT: plough, small brandy still, span saw, three axes, two planes, two bores, a dissel and a snymes, beside 95 cattle, 21 oxen and 347 sheep. Seventeen years later Ockert Oosthuijzen dies at a Modder Fonteyn on an Olifants with a WINKEL in the house and wagonmaker's wood in the yard. | WHAT IT IS NOT: this is MARTHINUS OOSTHUYSEN JANSZ, JAN's son. Our line is Jacobus's. 9 - a surname on the right river is not an identification, and no link is asserted. What it establishes is that OOSTHUYSENS WERE ALREADY ON THE SOUTHERN OLIFANTS A GENERATION BEFORE 1809, holding loan places, which the Citrusdal reading does not predict and the Swellendam reading does. It is also the best answer yet to why six Oosthuizen households sit in one George field cornetcy in 1816. | *** FINDING 5, on the follow-up question "look at 1755 Ockert's family, eg brothers. Any other farms in Swellendam named?" *** Thirteen farm names sit inside MOOC8 estates whose subject is an Oosthuizen. Three matter here, and one of the three is withdrawn. | *** AN OOSTHUYSEN DID HOLD A MODDERFONTEIN IN SWELLENDAM - IN 1776, AND ON THE WRONG RIVER. *** MOOC8/16.11a-b, 7 December 1776, the estate of WILLEM MARTEN OOSTHUIJSEN, widow Sara Pretorius, children Johannes Marthinus 10, Wessel 6, Willem 2: "Een opstal staande op de leening plaats genaamt de MODDER FENTEIJN gelegen aan de CAFFER KUIJLSRIVIER", valued Rd 10 - and it was inventoried "door den SECRETARIS VAN SWELLENDAM mons. Menso Blankensteyn". That is the same ground Casparus Andries Willemse holds in 1799 (MOOC8/23.9) and the same ground titled as MODDERFONTEIN No. 417 by diagram 592/1831 (SRC-466). So the surname and the farm name DO meet, in Swellendam, thirty-three years before the estate we care about - on the Kafferkuils, not the Olifants. Whether Willem Marten belongs to this family is not established and is not asserted. | ADRIAAN OOSTHUIJZEN, THE BROTHER, DIED WITH NO LAND AT ALL. MOOC8/55.42, 16 August 1804: widow CATHARINA PETRONELLA HORN and five minors aged 8, 6, 5, 2 and 10 months - Adriaan, Jacobus, Cornelia Carolina, Johannes Willem, Catharina Petronella Hermina, which matches the compiled tree name for name and age for age. The whole estate is Rd 448: a bed, three chests, pots, a plough, an ox-wagon, eleven trek oxen, four cattle, a mare, 124 goats and 43 sheep. NO OPSTAL, NO LOAN PLACE, NO FARM. The Jacobus aged 6 here is LEAD-0213's best-shaped A-son candidate. | *** AND A WITHDRAWAL, RECORDED BECAUSE IT NEARLY WENT IN. *** My first pass matched farm names inside a 2,500-character window and gave Adriaan the place "Kruijs Rivier gelegen aan de Duijvenhoks Rivier, Rd 2000". Reading his entry end to end, THAT FARM IS NOT IN IT - it belongs to a neighbouring estate and the window reached across the boundary. A farm worth Rd 2000 attached to the wrong brother would have been a finding with nothing under it. The same window gave Jacoba Cornelia a "Swellingrebel in 't Bokkeveld" that is likewise not in her entry. | JACOBA CORNELIA OOSTHUIZEN, THE YOUNGEST SISTER, IS CONFIRMED AND HER BROTHER TOOK THE INVENTORY. MOOC8/56.13a-b, 28 December 1805 - the exact death date the compiled tree carries for her. Husband Jacob van den Bank, earlier married to Jan Emmenes; five children, one of them DINA CAROLINA Johanna Catharina, named for the grandmother. It was taken "door de burger PIETER CORNELIS OOSTHUIZEN" - the brother at whose place the parents' own estate was inventoried three years earlier. Her estate carries a debt on "de plaats gen:t de MISTKRAAL VAN WILLEM GOOZEN gelegen aan de TOUWSBERG", which is Little Karoo ground in the old Swellendam district; it is a debt line, not a statement that she held it. | ONE MORE, NOT THIS FAMILY BUT THE SAME COUNTRY: MOOC8/32.22, 20 January 1816, NICOLAAS JACOBUS OOSTHUYZEN - "de BERGFONTYN gelegen aan deeze zeide van de Gourits Rivier" and a place "aan de VALSCH RIVIER gelegen aan de Twee Kuylen IN HET DISTRICT ZWELLENDAM". | THE SHAPE OF THE WHOLE SWEEP: Oosthuizen land in this series sits on the Kafferkuils, the Duivenhoks country, the Touwsberg, the Gouritz, the Attaquaskloof and the southern Olifants.
