SUPPLIED BY FRANS VERBATIM: "39. 't Kint JACOBUS JOHANNES - 4 Maij. Vader OCKER OOSTHUIJSEN. Moeder SUSANNA CATHARINA VAN TONDEREN. Get[uigen] - Jacobus Oosthuijsen, en Dina Carolina Britz, Johannes Jacobus Oosthuysen, en Johanna Jonker." | THE WITNESSES ARE THE GRANDPARENTS. Jacobus Oosthuijsen and Dina Carolina Britz are the 1722/1732 couple, PER-000230 and PER-000231 - the head of this whole line - standing at the font for their grandson. Johannes Jacobus Oosthuysen (b. before 7 Jan 1753) is the child's uncle, the father's eldest brother. | THE CHILD is Jacobus Johannes Oosthuizen, PER-000208, whose own 1867 death notice (SRC-451) gives his age as 82 years 11 months 10 days and so a birth about 19 November 1784. A 4 May baptism does not sit with a November birth IN THE SAME YEAR. | "it could have been the next may" - and that is the answer. Born about 19 November 1784, baptised 4 May 1785, a gap of five and a half months, which in this country is ordinary rather than remarkable: a family waited for a minister to come within reach. The same gap shows in this man's own children - his daughter Anna Magdalena was born 1 August 1818 and baptised 5 November at a visiting minister's stop (SRC-454). So the entry, the death notice and the 1809 inventory's "age 25" all agree, and the year on this crop should read 1785. The year is still not visible on the image and the reading rests on the arithmetic. [TO VERIFY] | THE FATHER IS "OCKER OOSTHUIJSEN", with no second name - matching how he is styled throughout his own 1809 estate (SRC-092) and how his son signs "Ocker Almero" on it. | FRANS'S READING, AND IT IS BETTER THAN THE ONE THIS PROJECT HAD: the "Jacobus" in "Ockert Jacobus Oosthuizen" on the 1867 death notice may not be a second given name at all. He was the SON OF JACOBUS - this entry proves it, with Jacobus at the font - so "Ocker Jacobuszoon Oosthuizen" is a PATRONYMIC, added when somebody needed to say which Ocker. That matters well beyond a name: it shows this family USING patronymics in exactly the form the 1833 Vrolykheid diagram uses one. See LEAD-0213.
