Death Notice 3999 1/2. 1. Name of the deceased? Jacobus Johannes Oosthuizen. 2. Birth place of deceased? Division of Swellendam. 3. Names of the Parents of the deceased? Ockert Jacobus Oosthuizen & Susanna Catharina van Tonder. 4. Age of the deceased? 82 Years 11 Months & 10 Days. 5. Condition in life? Farmer. 6. Married or unmarried? Married to Anna Helena Roscherr wid: of the late J. [R.] N[eset]. 7. The day of the decease? 29th October 1867. 8. At what house or where the person died? At his Residence on the farm Grootfontein div: Colesberg. 9. Names of the Children of the deceased, and whether Minors or Majors? 1st Ockert Jacobus 2nd Daniel Johannes, by the first Marriage between deceased & the late A. M. Strydom, both Majors. 3rd Jacobus Johannes & Hester Cornelia Catharina (Oosthuizen) both Minors. 10. Whether deceased has left any property & what? 4 Oxen, 2 Bales Wool, some household furniture & farming implements, half share of the expected Crops still on the Lands. Grootfontein Division Colesberg 22nd Nov 1867. [signed] A. H. Oosthuizen." | The surname of the widow's first husband is hard on this scan; SRC-452, the marriage register of the same couple, gives it clearly as NESER, and the notice is read as "Neser" on that authority rather than on the notice alone. The informant is the widow, who married the deceased in 1847 and never met his parents, so answer 3 is second-hand - which matters, and is corroborated elsewhere rather than taken on its own.
