Supplied by A WINE ESTATE'S OWN PROMOTIONAL HISTORY and the weakest kind of source this project cites; it says 'Legend has it' of one episode and should be read that way throughout. It states that the estate is two portions, WITTENBERG and ST MARTIN; that the first holder of the Wittenberg portion was ANGELA OF BENGAL, born 1646, sold to Jan van Riebeeck, then to Abraham Gabbema who freed her in 1666 for her 'seer goeie en getroue dienste'; and that 'the first recorded registration of the land is in the name of a Jacobus van As, who was one of Angela's children'. WHAT CHECKS OUT: Jacobus van As IS her son. Her own 1720 estate (SRC-710) lists his three children among her heirs, standing in his place. WHAT DOES NOT: her estate names her ground as HONDSWYK and a Table Valley garden, and no Wittenberg. And the Paarl name index carries TWO Wittenbergs, 379 and 185; No. 185 is this family's, surveyed for Schalk Willemse van der Merwe in 1717 (SRC-709). If the estate's story is right at all it belongs to 379, which is a different farm. LEAD-0388.
